140. Also if whom be repeated in a sentence, it may be<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r translated á quien, or al cual : <strong>the</strong> latter is generally<br />

preferred when we wish to individualise an object : Ex.<br />

El hombre á quien hablamos, y d The man to whom we spoke, <strong>and</strong><br />

quien, or al cual dimos la no- to whom we gave <strong>the</strong> news,<br />

ticia.<br />

141. Cuyo partakes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature both <strong>of</strong> a relative <strong>and</strong><br />

a possessive Pronoun ; as a relative, it relates to as an antecedent,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as a possessive Pronoun it refers to <strong>the</strong> person<br />

or thing possessed ; in which latter capacity it agrees in<br />

number <strong>and</strong> gender with <strong>the</strong> person or thing possessed, <strong>and</strong><br />

not with <strong>the</strong> possessor : Ex.<br />

El hombre cuyo sombrero es este. The man whose hat this is.<br />

Los autores cuyas obras he leído. The authors whose works I have<br />

read.<br />

142. Relatives are expressed in <strong>Spanish</strong> where <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

frequently omitted in English : Ex.<br />

La casa que fuimos á, ver. The house we went to see.<br />

Las instituciones de que hablaron. The institutions <strong>the</strong>y spoke <strong>of</strong>.<br />

143. The relative in English does not invariably /oiZow<br />

<strong>the</strong> Preposition by which it is governed ; as, for instance.<br />

The gentleman whom / wrote to ; The persons which you<br />

speak <strong>of</strong>. In <strong>Spanish</strong>, however, it must immediately follow<br />

<strong>the</strong> Preposition by which it is governed ; as, El caballero á<br />

quien escribí, Las personas de quienes habla Vmd.<br />

INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS.<br />

144. These are Relative Pronouns, used interrogatively,<br />

as follows : Ex.<br />

¿ Quien es ? Who is it ?<br />

¿ Cual es de Vmd. ? Which is yours?<br />

¿ Qué es aquello ? What is that ?<br />

¿ Cuya es esta casa? Whose house is this ?
