Winners of European
Aluminium in Renovation Award 2009
Winner category Residential: Loft Living Ackermannfabrik, Augsburg, Germany
The winners have been
announced for the 2 nd
European Aluminium in
Renovation Award. Two
awards, four special prizes,
and an ex-aequo jury prize
for energy efficiency were
given.
Prof. Jan Brouwer, chairman
of the jury, revealed the
names of the winning projects:
LoftLiving Ackermannfabrik,
Augsburg, Germany, renovated
by Nething Generalplaner
Architekten, Ulm/Neu-Ulm,
and the renovated Corriere
della Sera, newspaper headquarters,
Milan, Italy, from
Gregotti Associati International
Architects, Milan, were
the proud winners of the two
European Awards.
The European Aluminium
in Renovation Award
2009 was given for building
renovation and refurbishment
projects in which aluminium
was used in a sensible
and innovative manner and
which were carried out after
1 January 2006. Besides architects,
principals or property
owners, project developers
and building-engineers were
allowed to enter.
The European Aluminium
in Renovation Award 2009 is
an initiative of the Building
Group of the European Aluminium
Association (EAA)
and the Aluminium For
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park
Future Generations (AFFG)
programme in cooperation
with aluminium associations
in 14 European countries. Of
the 130 entries received at
national level, 31 were nominated
for the European Final.
The nominations are subdivided
into nine in the Residential
and 22 in the Non-
Residential category.
A European Aluminium
Award was given in each of
the two categories. In addition,
four special prizes and
a jury prize ex-aquo were
awarded.
The following criteria
were taken into account when
assessing the entries:

aluminium
■ Energy efficiency
■ Life-cycle thinking
■ Contemporary design
■ Socio-economic impact
■ Value added to the original
building

The new aluminium
windows and doors add a
modern touch to the former
textile factory whilst taking
aspects of building conservation
into consideration.
The high windows with their
narrow profiles still let in the
daylight, something that was
so important for the interior
of the former textile factory;
the modern window profile
contributes to a level of thermal
insulation geared toward
future requirements. The
special shape of the window
profiles resembles the appearance
of the previous steel windows.

The jury was impressed by
the careful use and well-considered
design of aluminium
taking into account the interesting
architectural quality of
the building complex.
World’s largest space framework
More than 231,000 square
metres of metal weighing
over 900 tonnes and more
than 100,000 litres of paint
– one of the most spectacular
building projects in the
United Arab Emirates now
has a roof. With an area the
size of 50 football pitches,
the Ferrari World Abu
Dhabi theme park has the
world’s largest space framework.
Interfalz, a mediumsized
company based in
Oranienburg, Germany,
was responsible for the
manufacture of the roofing
system.
The roof of the leisure
facility has an area of over
210,000 m 2 and there is also
a metal façade with an additional
surface area of over
21,000 m 2 . Interfalz used
transportable roll-forming
units in Abu Dhabi to produce
the more than 24,600 lengths
of aluminium sheeting, some
of which were 96 m long; this
allowed the single sheets to

be produced on site in practically
any desired length.
A team of 28 employees
who operated the rollformers
and bending units and
supervised the installation
took almost ten months to
produce metal sheeting totalling
600 kilometres in length
at a height of up to 50 metres.
“The result makes us very
proud,” says Heyung Meyer,
managing director of Interfalz,
“because it shows how
efficiently our technology
functions even under extreme
conditions.” The material was

lenging conditions because of
the extremely high outside
temperatures and the high
humidity.
In order to cope with these
conditions, all of the roofing
materials used were subjected
to an additional material
examination.

This was a difficult and
complex renovation project.
It entailed finding a pertinent,
all-embracing solution to the
renovation requirements of a
city centre block whose stratified
development over the
years had created an irregular
ground plan comprising a
series of heterogeneous units.
The requirements were not
just to restore formal unity
and identity to a cluster of

so-called ‘Thermohalters’.
These fasteners, developed
by Interfalz, comprise a special
high-strength plastic that
barely conducts any heat or
cold. The use of Interfalz
Thermohalters is therefore
particularly beneficial in very
hot regions, as well as in very
cold areas because it has been
shown that it helps reduce
energy costs.
Everything at Ferrari
World Abu Dhabi revolves
around horse power and the
fast cars from Maranello.
The roofing has thus been
painted in characteristic Ferrari
red. The shape of the roof
resembles the classic lines of
a Ferrari GT. The theme park
is directly next to the newly
built race circuit where the
last race of this year’s Formula
1 season took place took
place on 1 November 2009.
