Wucbale awl deposit (Wollo)
The Inter-Trappean cod bearing lacustrine sediments of Wuchale
is located 62 km hrn Dessie along the Addis Ababa-Asrnara
rod. The area belongs to the Central Plateau of Ethiopia which is
largely covered by volcanic &s of trap series (olivine basalt,
porphyritic pyroxene basalt), The Inter-Trappan coal bearing
lac-e sedimentary sequence is composed of argillaceous shale
and clay, menac8ous material (silty sand, sandy silt, sandstone),
organogenic deposits of (carbonaceous shale, carbonaceous clay
and cod seams). The sedimentary formation deposited on a
basaltic substratum bounded by faulted block graben.
Coal occurrences, mainly lignite vdetim are known to occur in
m y areas in Ethiopia So far known lignite deposits are located
in (Gonder, Wollega, Shewa, Ma, Wollo, Tigray and Ham):
among these, occurrences with esti.nated cod reserves are found
in: Yayu, Moye, Delbi (1llubabur); Chelga (Gonder, 1 9.7 Mt), Nejo
(Wollega, 3 M), Wuchale (Wollo, 23 Mt) and Mush Valley
(Shewa, 0.3 Mt) and are relatively extensive, The available data
indicate that Yayu, Delbi and Moye coal deposits are more ,
economical than other deposits in the country, with resources
estimated at about 32 Mt, 20 Mi, and 40.5 Mt respectively (EGS,
1989). Other coal occurrences where total resewes are not yet
estimated are found in the lohities: Chida, Jiren, LalwSapo,
Meteso, Sayoma (Illubabur); Ankober, She, Debre Berhm- Abo-
Gedam, Debre Libanos, Muger, Mojo, Mojo-Anchano (Shewa);
