The Career Services Office offers a variety of services to meet the<br />

needs of all students and alumni. Students, prospective graduates<br />

and alumni are eligible to apply for any of the job listings posted<br />

outside our office or around campus. We offer part-time, full-time<br />

and temporary job listings; we announce federal, state and municipal<br />

openings and positions available with placement agencies.<br />

Whether you are looking for academically related employment or<br />

general employment, we can assist you.<br />

Alumni enjoy assistance that provides them with career-related<br />

job leads mailed directly to their home. Alumni and students are<br />

encouraged to take advantage of the following services:<br />

W.I.A. Programs<br />

The federal Workforce Investment Act (W.I.A.) offers a comprehensive<br />

range of workforce development activities through statewide<br />

and local organizations. <strong>Naugatuck</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

is a partner in the Workforce Investment Board in the Greater<br />

Waterbury area. NVCC offers approved programs that provide<br />

education and training to adults and dislocated workers who have<br />

been awarded vouchers under W.I.A., these may include:<br />

• Job Seekers<br />

• Laid-off Workers<br />

• Youth<br />

• Incumbent Workers<br />

• New Entrants to the Workforce<br />

• Veterans<br />

• Persons with Disabilities<br />

• Employers<br />

qualified by the D.O.L. students should schedule an appointment<br />

counsEling sErVicEs<br />

The counselors in the Counseling Center assist students with a<br />

variety of career, academic, transfer, and personal concerns. Appointments<br />

may be made in person in Kinney Hall, K519 or by<br />

phone at (203) 575-8025. You can also email counseling@nvcc.<br />

commnet.edu.<br />

• Academic counseling—Academic counseling is offered to<br />

assist students in recognizing the options that are available<br />

for their educational planning, to illustrate the need to plan<br />

ahead, to learn the language of educational planning, learn the<br />

optimal sequence of courses, identify academic requirements<br />

and electives, educational decision making, and develop an<br />

overall educational plan.<br />

nEw students to the college who want to know about admissions<br />

and program requirements should contact the Admissions<br />

office.<br />

rEturning students to the college should contact their<br />

faculty advisor: A list of advisors can found in the Counseling<br />

Center.<br />

• career counseling—Career counseling is an educational<br />

and developmental process which is dedicated to student<br />

self-realization, self-direction, and to assist in developing<br />

skills in career decision making. The counseling center offers<br />

a variety of career planning opportunities including; a series<br />

of individual sessions, a three credit Career Planning course,<br />

a free 6 week Career Planning Seminar, and a computerized<br />

career program (SIGI 3).<br />

• Personal counseling–The distinguishing characteristic of<br />

counseling is a primary concern with the whole human nature<br />

of the student. Counseling services for personal concerns<br />

are provided by professionally trained counselors. Some<br />

concerns for personal counseling include are but not limited<br />

to; academic issues and dilemmas, making life decisions,<br />

developing self-confidence, managing stress, and alleviating<br />

personal barriers to success in college. Referrals to outside<br />

agencies are made as needed.<br />

• transfer Planning—Students intending to transfer to other<br />

colleges or universities should meet with their academic<br />

advisor, or see a counselor early in their academic studies.<br />

Credits that are transferable and applicable vary from college<br />

to college, so it is critical that students learn about the college<br />

of their choice, and the transfer process for that college. The<br />

Counseling Center annually hosts college transfer fairs for<br />

students in which area colleges and universities participate.<br />

trAnsfEr informAtion<br />

Counselors provide assistance for students who desire to transfer<br />

into a four-year college or university. Application forms are available,<br />

as well as information on the transfer of credits, scholarships,<br />

financial aid, and admission requirements for both in-state and<br />

out-of-state colleges and universities. note: It is also important<br />

that students consult with receiving institutions to confirm that<br />

courses will transfer.<br />

Graduates of the <strong>Connecticut</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>s with a GPA of<br />

2.0 or higher are guaranteed admission to the university of their<br />

choice within the <strong>Connecticut</strong> State University System. Students<br />

must to application deadlines. See the Counseling Center for details.<br />

Special Transfer Compacts have been established between<br />

each of the universities in the <strong>Connecticut</strong> State University System<br />

and <strong>Naugatuck</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>. These compacts ensure<br />

academic advising by both the sending and the receiving institution,<br />

and full transferability of coursework. Students must apply<br />

through the Counseling Center prior to completing 15 transferable<br />

credits and follow designated transfer programs.<br />

The University of <strong>Connecticut</strong> offers the Guaranteed Admission<br />

Program, an agreement between the University and the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />

<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>s. <strong>Naugatuck</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> students may apply if they:<br />

• Make application through the Counseling Center prior to<br />

completion of 16 transferable credits<br />

• Limit to majors offered in UConn’s <strong>College</strong> of Liberal<br />

Arts and Sciences and <strong>College</strong> of Agriculture and<br />

Natural Resources<br />

• Complete a prescribed articulation program at NVCC<br />

• Earn a minimum 3.0 GPA upon graduation from NVCC<br />

• Observe the application procedures and deadlines within<br />

the agreement
