The Stage Managers’ Association, founded in
1982, is a professional organization of stage
managers who work in theater, dance, opera,
industrials, special events, and other venues.
Through meetings and events in the New York
area and nationwide, its website, and regional
activities coordinated by its members, the SMA
seeks to create a network through which stage
managers can share ideas, educate themselves,
and build strong relationships. Among
the benefits of membership, the SMA provides
job openings posted via e-mail. Although the
SMA is not a labor union, its membership includes
those of AEA, AGMA, AGVA, AFTRA,
and DGA, among other entertainment industry
unions, as well as nonunion, career-minded
stage managers. The SMA welcomes all stage
managers who feel they can benefit from the
opportunity for discourse with their colleagues
and are encouraged to contribute their energies
to the Association’s growth.
