WHO WE ARE
USITT is the association of design, production, and technology professionals in the
performing arts and entertainment industry. Founded in 1960 by a dedicated group
of theatre professionals and educators, USITT has grown from its modest
beginnings in New York City to become a truly international organization. Today the
USITT office is located in Syracuse, New York, with a Board of Directors from across
the United States and Canada. Elected by the membership, the Executive
Committee and Directors at Large operate a fiscally sound not-for-profit corporation.
The thirty member all volunteer board meets twice yearly in person and
communicates daily electronically to assess the current activities of the association
and to plan for future programs, exhibitions, and conferences.
USITT’s 3,800+ members include scenery, costume, sound and lighting designers;
scenery, costume, sound and lighting technicians; properties, makeup and special
effects craftspersons; stagehands; architects; theatrical consultants; acousticians;
performing arts educators and staff; and performing arts manufacturers, suppliers,
and distributors throughout the United States, Canada, and 40 other countries.
Mission
The United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc. (USITT) connects performing
arts design and technology communities to ensure a vibrant dialogue among
practitioners, educators, and students.
Vision
USITT will be a prominent leader of theatre and entertainment design, management,
and technology through our conferences, exhibitions, awards, publications, and
research. USITT is dedicated to the professional development of those who are an
integral part of the performing arts and entertainment industry.

technology in the performing arts and entertainment industry;
• USITT will disseminate information about the history of the field, and aesthetic
and technological developments by producing the USITT Annual Conference &
Stage Expo, tours, and symposia;
• USITT will advocate for safe, efficient, and ethical practices;
• USITT will continue to strengthen the organizational operations of the Institute and
National Office;
• USITT will grow and provide valuable services to our membership and insure that
interests of members are represented regionally, nationally, and internationally.
WHAT WE OFFER
USITT keeps thousands of design, production, and technology professionals in
touch with each other and with the rapidly changing worlds of performing arts and
entertainment. Our publications provide members with valuable information and
professional development. Our Annual Conference & Stage Expo also contributes
greatly to advancing our members’ knowledge and skills while simultaneously
providing a face-to-face networking opportunity. Throughout the year members stay
connected by accessing the USITT web site and by using the member contact
information printed in the annual Membership Directory & Resource Guide.
