Frank Ludwig is an associate professor<br />

and head of design and production at Viterbo<br />

University, and has been teaching at the college<br />

level since 1991. He has professional<br />

credits in set, costume, lighting design, and<br />

scenic art for a number of regional theatres in<br />

the southeast and central United States. Freelance<br />

credits include designs for Charlotte<br />

Repertory in North Carolina, Seaside Music<br />

Theatre and Riverside Theatre in Florida, and<br />

Mill Mountain Theatre and The Barter Theatre<br />

in Virginia. He is a member of United Scenic<br />

Artists Local 829 in the set design category.<br />

He lives in La Crescent, Minnesota, with his<br />

wife, Mary, and their seven children.<br />

Scene Design Commission Meeting I and II<br />

Randy Lutz has been a member of the staff<br />

at The Santa Fe Opera for 28 years and is currently<br />

the properties director, liaising with national<br />

and international designers and<br />

directors. Randy’s early years with The Santa<br />

Fe Opera placed him in a number of positions<br />

including properties running crew chief, production<br />

housing director, and scenic carpenter;<br />

all of which gave him a broad overview of<br />

the workings of a major arts organization. He<br />

annually attends professional conferences to<br />

interview applicants in all technical departments<br />

at The Santa Fe Opera, including costumes,<br />

<strong>stage</strong> properties, scenic art, <strong>stage</strong><br />

operations and electrics. He also reviews portfolios<br />

of aspiring technicians for the Opera’s<br />

Apprentice Technician Program, which is<br />

among the most well-respected programs of<br />

its kind in the country. In addition to his work<br />

at The Santa Fe Opera, Randy has <strong>stage</strong>d several<br />

works by New Mexico playwright Joel Ensana<br />

and operas for Opera Southwest. Most<br />

recently, he was engaged as the art director,<br />

through his design and display company Art &<br />

Soul, for the Fashion in Film exhibition at the<br />

New Mexico Museum of Art.<br />

Big Careers Outside the Big Cities<br />

Andi Lyons is professor of theatre, director<br />

of design and technology, and resident<br />

lighting designer for the State University of<br />

New York at Albany’s department of theatre.<br />

Andi has designed lighting or scenery for<br />

more than 90 major university productions<br />

since 1982 and served as the department’s<br />

technical director until 1992. She has been involved<br />

in many freelance activities with such<br />

companies as the Tri-Cities Opera, Stageworks,<br />

Capital Repertory Theatre, Elword Productions,<br />

Des Moines Metro Opera,<br />

Williamstown Theatre Festival, Shakespeare in<br />

the Park, LaMaMa E.T.C., Leap Productions,<br />

the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force,<br />

Keuka Summer Theatre, and the Capital District<br />

Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Recent<br />

favorite lighting designs have included<br />

Tosca for Tri-Cities Opera, Brutal Imagination<br />

for Stageworks, and All in the Timing and<br />

Marisol.<br />

Christopher Lyons is manager of technical<br />

and educational communications with<br />

Shure Incorporated. With more than 21 years<br />

of experience in training, technical support,<br />

and product management at Shure, he has<br />

presented training sessions for retail salespeople,<br />

created online training content, and<br />

supervised the deployment of third-party, instore<br />

product demonstrators both in the<br />

United States and abroad. He has written numerous<br />

articles and technical papers including<br />

Introduction to Wireless Systems and<br />

Audio for Distance Learning.<br />

David M. Makuch is in his third year as<br />

assistant professor/technical director at Marietta<br />

College in Southeastern Ohio. He is the<br />

department lighting and sound designer as<br />

well as technical coordinator of the theatre facility.<br />

He teaches classes in <strong>stage</strong>craft, lighting,<br />

sound, and theatre appreciation. During<br />

breaks, he freelances in theatre as well as corporate/concert<br />

lighting work in Chicago. He<br />

earned his MFA from Western Illinois University<br />

and BFA from Ohio University.<br />

Karen Maness, USITT Co-Commissioner<br />

of Scene Design, is the charge scenic artist at<br />

the University of Texas at Austin Performing<br />

Arts Center and an adjunct professor of scene<br />

painting for the UT department of theatre and<br />

dance. Prior to her move to Austin in 1999,<br />

she was on staff at South Coast Repertory in<br />

Costa Mesa, California, and worked extensively<br />

in industrial display, theme parks, and<br />

film.<br />

Scene Design Commission Meeting I and II<br />

Jack Mann is one of the true pioneers of<br />

theatre sound design. Originally from Michigan,<br />

he began his life in the theatre as an electrician<br />

when he was just 18 in 1941. After<br />

serving in World War II he returned to Michigan<br />

where he continued as a theatre electrician<br />

for eight years before moving to New<br />

York in 1959. He became involved in theatre<br />

sound and soon gained a reputation for his<br />

creative design and innovative techniques long<br />

before the term sound designer came into<br />

being. During his 27 years on Broadway, Jack<br />

had the privilege of working with renowned<br />

artists such as George Abbott, Leonard Bernstein,<br />

Harold Prince, and Stephen Sondheim.<br />

He is a father of two, grandfather of four, and<br />

great grandfather of four. He retired in 1986<br />

and now lives in New Jersey with Jean, his<br />

wife of 66 years.<br />

Steve Mannshardt has been the production<br />

manager and resident lighting designer<br />

for TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, California for<br />

the past 14 years. He has worked as lighting<br />

and scenic designer for many theatre, dance,<br />

and opera companies in Unites States and has<br />

taught lighting design at Santa Rose Junior<br />

College for 15 years in addition to being guest<br />

lecturer at many other colleges and universities.<br />

at Appalachian State University. She<br />

Eric L. Marsh is the assistant professor of<br />

lighting and sound design at Sam Houston<br />

State University. Eric does freelance design<br />

work throughout the Houston area as well as<br />

Eric received his MFA from Western Illinois<br />

University.<br />

Do I Have the Right Textbook?<br />

Patrick Marsh is the creative talent behind<br />

the animatronics and exhibits of the Answers<br />

in Genesis’ Creation Museum. His designs include<br />

the popular Jaws and King Kong attractions<br />

at Universal Studios in Florida. For more<br />

than 35 years, he has contributed to projects<br />

such as coordinating 50 designers for the<br />

1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the<br />

unveiling of the refurbished Statue of Liberty<br />

in New York Harbor in 1986. He earned his<br />

bachelor’s degree in industrial design and his<br />

master’s degree in environmental design from<br />

the University of California Los Angeles. Before<br />

joining the Creation Museum staff, he was<br />

the director of design for Dream Makers in<br />

Japan.<br />

Verda Beth Martell currently serves as<br />

the assistant technical director/opera technical<br />

director for Krannert Center at the University<br />

of Illinois, Vice-Commissioner for<br />

Section, and Project Leader for the<br />

Physics of Theatre Project. She holds an MFA<br />

Eleonore Maudry came to Bloomington<br />

from Switzerland to attend Indiana University.<br />

While completing her master’s degree, she<br />

started working for the opera/ballet costume<br />

shop as a stitcher and for the wardrobe crew.<br />

She became a first hand in 1998 and is currently<br />

interim director of costumes, wigs, and<br />

make-up.<br />

Eric McAfee has been involved in the theatre<br />

since the late 1980s working for several<br />

years as a rigging installer/supervisor before<br />

joining JR Clancy as a project manager in<br />

1999. Since then he has worked on projects<br />

China, Turkey, Spain, and Brazil. He has a BFA<br />

in theatre from the University of Illinois.<br />

John McFadden is professor of lighting<br />

and sound design and production manager at<br />

the University of Memphis, Tennessee. He has<br />

Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Indianapolis<br />

Opera, Playhouse on the Square (Memphis),<br />

Shauna Meador is an assistant professor<br />

Donna J. Meester, associate professor of<br />

theatre, is the director of the costume design<br />

and production programs at the University of<br />

Alabama. She is Chair of the Costume Poster<br />

Jury and is serving as the design vice-chair<br />

Michael Mehler teaches at Allegheny College<br />

in northwest Pennsylvania and has also<br />

taught at the College of William & Mary, the<br />

University of Pittsburgh, and the College of<br />

Charleston. He has designed scenery and<br />

lighting for theatre and dance in Atlanta,<br />

Austin, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. A graduate<br />

from Northwestern University and the University<br />

of Texas Austin, he is currently finishing<br />

up a Ph.D. in theatre history and criticism<br />
