Jakyung Seo, a lighting designer with an<br />

MFA from the, University of Illinois at Urbana-<br />

Champaign, is an assistant professor of lighting<br />

at the University of Cincinnati. She has<br />

taught lighting, sound design, and various<br />

computer programs at California State University<br />

Fresno, University of Toledo, and<br />

Kyung Sung University in Korea. While teaching,<br />

she has worked as a professional lighting<br />

designer and assistant lighting designer in regional<br />

theatres including Steppenwolf, Congo<br />

Square, New World, and Lodestone Theatre in<br />

Los Angeles. She has numerous professional<br />

design credits in South Korea and Japan such<br />

as Have Been Thinking, Medusacus, The Can,<br />

Spring My Hometown, and What We Want,<br />

which was awarded the best prize at The International<br />

Dance Festival in Saitama, Japan.<br />

She gave a lighting design lecture, Transnational<br />

Aesthetics and the Impact on the Lighting<br />

Designer’s Process at Scenofest 2007 in<br />

Prague.<br />

Magic Sheets Aren’t Magic!<br />

Xiaolan Sha was the lighting designer for<br />

the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the<br />

Beijing Olympics in 2008, as well as the Opening<br />

and Closing Ceremonies for the Beijing<br />

Paralympics in 2008. The most influential<br />

lighting designer in China, he has been responsible<br />

for lighting designs for almost all<br />

key national events within China. Trained at<br />

Shanghai Academy of Drama, he is a national<br />

grade-I lighting designer, the resident lighting<br />

designer for the National Dance Company, and<br />

Vice Director of the Lighting Committee for the<br />

OISTAT Center in China. His design talents<br />

have also been shown in theatres, opera,<br />

dance, musicals, life events, and on television.<br />

He is the recipient of several national awards<br />

including Wenhua, Golden Eagle, StarLight,<br />

Five-One and Chinese Academy Award.<br />

Olympics Lighting Designer, Sha Xiaolan<br />

Adam Shalleck has a degree in architecture<br />

from Virginia Tech and worked in technical<br />

theatre and entertainment. After 15 years<br />

with other leading theatre consultants, he<br />

founded the Shalleck Collaborative in 2003.<br />

MarkW. Shanda is chair of The Ohio State<br />

University department of theatre and its resident<br />

technical director. He has been involved<br />

in USITT for over 20 years and has regularly<br />

led interactive workshops on networking and<br />

creative problem solving. A current national<br />

Director at Large, he served is the technical director<br />

for the United States entry in the Prague<br />

Quadrennial in 1999.<br />

Kip Shawger is the Kennedy Center/American<br />

College Theatre Festival national design<br />

vice chair. A native of New Jersey who received<br />

a BS in drama from Nebraska Wesleyan<br />

University and an MFA in design from Bradley<br />

University, he is an award-winning designer<br />

with over 300 design credits and 30 years’ experience<br />

in education, community, professional<br />

theatre, television, and film. Currently<br />

he is associate chair and head of design, department<br />

of theatre and dance at Ball State<br />

University.<br />

Festival<br />

Jay Sheehan oversees the <strong>stage</strong> management<br />

and production management areas of<br />

for the school of theatre, television, and film at<br />

San Diego State University. He also serves as<br />

associate producer for the school’s annual<br />

Theatre of the World Festival which is committed<br />

to bringing international theatre for<br />

youth to San Diego. He specializes in the area<br />

of concert venue design and production management<br />

for the music industry. He has<br />

worked on over 400 large scale events and<br />

concerts featuring artists such as Elton John,<br />

Aerosmith, Dave Matthews Band, and Sting.<br />

He is currently creating an arts and event management<br />

program at SDSU which will begin in<br />

the fall of 2009.<br />

Steven Shelley has created lighting, managed<br />

production, and toured for over 35 years.<br />

Recently, he worked for Patti LuPone, Paul<br />

Winter, and the Spoleto Festival USA. He’s the<br />

designer of the plastic Field Templates and the<br />

VectorWorks toolkit SoftSymbols. He is the<br />

author of A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting.<br />

Stirling Shelton received his BFA from<br />

the University of Florida and his MFA from the<br />

University of Missouri at Kansas City. He was<br />

a dancing character for Walt Disney World and<br />

a <strong>stage</strong> manager for Busch Gardens, Williamsburg,<br />

Virginia. He is finishing his ninth season<br />

as the technical director at Cincinnati Playhouse<br />

in the Park. He also serves the Playhouse<br />

as the safety officer. Stirling is an<br />

adjunct instructor at the University of Cincinnati,<br />

College-Conservatory of Music teaching<br />

pneumatics, hydraulics, motors, electronics,<br />

and motion control. He is Vice-Chair of Operations<br />

for the Ohio Valley Regional Section of<br />

USITT.<br />

Brian S. Shevelenko received a BA<br />

from Carnegie Mellon University, a graduate<br />

certificate from San Jose State University,<br />

and an MFA in lighting design from<br />

San Diego State University. Through the<br />

years, Brian has taught theatre at all levels<br />

from elementary through graduate students.<br />

He has received numerous awards<br />

for his theatre work including the “Best<br />

Lighting Design in 2002” from San Diego<br />

Playbill Magazine, The “Patte” Award from<br />

KPBS, and the Linda Wallitner Memorial<br />

Technical Vest for work on several shows<br />

in the Northern California area. Brian designed<br />

numerous shows at San Diego<br />

State University including operas, musicals,<br />

and plays. Brian has worked professionally<br />

at the Chicago Shakespeare<br />

Company, the Old Globe Theatre in San<br />

Diego, the New York International Fringe<br />

Festival, and other regional and local theatres<br />

in Chicago, California, and Texas.<br />

Bruce Smith is the dean of the school of<br />

Dave Smith<br />

Becoming the Safety Officer & Surviving as<br />

the Safety Officer<br />

David E. Smith is director of the theatre<br />

sound design BFA and MFA programs at the<br />

North Carolina School of the Arts. Before coming<br />

to the United States, he spent eight years<br />

at the Royal National Theatre in London, England,<br />

as one of its senior sound designers/engineers.<br />

He has designed sound at North<br />

Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts; Arena<br />

Stage in Washington, D.C.; Trinity Repertory<br />

Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island; Alliance<br />

Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia; and Triad Stage in<br />

Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1995, he was<br />

nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for outstanding<br />

sound design for The Revengers’<br />

Comedies at Arena Stage. SoundPlug and<br />

SafeFlame, two of his inventions, have enjoyed<br />

much success within the international theatre<br />

James Smith is the president of Soundsculpture<br />

Incorporated and the designer of the<br />

RC4 Wireless Dimming System. He teaches<br />

firmware development at the University of<br />

Toronto Professional Development Center and<br />

has earned master certification from the Microchip<br />

Consultant Review Board. He has<br />

served as a director of Revolution Display Systems<br />

Inc. and developed the control systems<br />

for scrolling sign matrices seen in Times<br />

Square, New York City, and Dundas Square,<br />

Toronto.<br />

Case Studies<br />

Jeff Smith is a lead worker in the Division<br />

of Hazardous Waste Management (DHWM) in<br />

the Ohio EPA’s Southwest District Office in<br />

Dayton, Ohio. Jeff has worked for the Ohio<br />

EPA for 16 years. Prior to working in the<br />

DHWM, Jeff served as an environmental monitoring<br />

coordinator in Office of Federal Facilities<br />

Oversight. In that position, he coordinated<br />

Ohio EPA’s multi media environmental sampling<br />

program for oversight at the United<br />

States Department of Energy’s Mound Plant in<br />

Miamisburg, Ohio. In his current position, Jeff<br />

assists other inspectors with compliance issues,<br />

investigates complaints alleging improper<br />

management of hazardous waste,<br />

conducts inspections of facilities that generate<br />

hazardous waste and/or initiates and supports<br />

enforcement activities as appropriate.<br />

Jeff also provides technical assistance and education<br />

to the regulated community, industry,<br />

government officials, consultants, and citizens.<br />

He is a current member of the DHWM<br />

state Inspector’s Quality Committee, Environ-<br />
