S1tbjects of Examination.<br />

A. Obli'latory.-(a) Latin. (b) One of the following Ianr;uages:--Greek,<br />

French, German, Italian. The qualifying test<br />

for a and b will be translation from the language; but marks will<br />

be given for translation into it, and in the case of the modern<br />

languages, for colloquial proficiency. (c) English Composition,<br />

including Precis Writing.<br />

B. Optional.- -Cd) Pure Mathematics, viz. : Euclid I.-IV. and<br />

YI. ; Algebra, including the Binomial Theorem; Trigonometry,<br />

including the solution of Triangles; Analytical Geometry (Elemen_<br />

tary) and Mixed Mathematics, including Statics and Dynamics<br />

treated without the Differential Calculus. (e) (1) Modern<br />

Geography (and 2) Ancient and lIIodern History. The examination<br />

in History will be confined to certain periods to be prescribed<br />

for each examination. Cl) The elements of Constitutional and<br />

International Law and Political Economy. (g) Geology, Civil<br />

Engineering, and Surveying. (It) Any two languages included<br />

under the head Cb) which huve not been taken up as obligatory.<br />

Every candidatE must show a competent knowledge of the<br />

obligatory subjects, and may select any two of the optional subjects.<br />

STUDENT IN1:ERPRETERS (China, Japan, and Siam), are<br />

also selected by open Competition.<br />
