1.4 CONCLUSION<br />

Chapter 1 is concerned with presenting the background in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> this research<br />

and its the main motivation. A snapshot <strong>of</strong> the research findings is also captured and<br />

presented in this chapter. The main purpose is to summarise the key research findings<br />

and present them in a concise manner. The structure <strong>of</strong> this thesis from chapter 1 to 6<br />

has been laid out with a brief introduction.<br />

The rationales behind this research are also explained from both legal and<br />

technological perspectives. The main rationale behind the research is to fill the gaps in<br />

previous studies in the same domain. The findings about the testing environment,<br />

procedures and the per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>of</strong> the disk imaging tools are also explained briefly.<br />

The structure <strong>of</strong> this thesis also provides guidance <strong>for</strong> the readers.<br />

To further explore the gaps in the research field, Section 2.1 <strong>of</strong>fers an overview<br />

<strong>of</strong> the digital <strong>for</strong>ensic environment, including the review <strong>of</strong> relevant literature about<br />

the investigative processes and the development <strong>of</strong> digital <strong>for</strong>ensic tools. Some<br />

previously conducted studies on legal and technical implications <strong>of</strong> digital <strong>for</strong>ensic<br />

areas are reviewed in Section 2.2. The legal significance <strong>of</strong> the digital <strong>for</strong>ensic tools<br />

lies in the admissibility <strong>of</strong> digital evidence. The technical and legal challenges are<br />

demanding research <strong>of</strong> digital <strong>for</strong>ensics tools verification and validation. The chapter<br />

also defines and investigates the contemporary state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art disk imaging tools.<br />
