inter-APs throughput than o<strong>the</strong>r locations.
Phase 3 measurement showed that two APs could provide adequate RSS and throughput
in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice. The configuration <strong>of</strong> “AP mode” with E<strong>the</strong>rnet connection would have
much better inter-APs performance than <strong>the</strong> “WDS with AP mode”. However, <strong>the</strong>
“WDS with AP mode” has <strong>the</strong> advantage <strong>of</strong> being cable free. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, two
solutions for different requirements in WLAN design and deployment were discussed.
The number <strong>of</strong> users that an AP can serve concurrently is an important issue <strong>of</strong> WLAN
design and AP placement. <strong>An</strong> understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong> application and
network throughput would help to calculate capacity. The throughputs and RSS were
gained from extensive measurements. The average data size was based on <strong>the</strong>
bandwidth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Xtra wireless plan. Our capacity plan showed that two APs would
provide sufficient throughput to serve every staff in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice.
Previous studies on WLANs have focused more on improving <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> PHY
and MAC, transmission power control, and channel assignment than AP placement.
According to our experience, observation and <strong>the</strong> propagation measurements conducted
in this experimental study, we have concluded that an appropriate AP placement can
improve WLAN performance significantly. Accordingly, we have proposed some
recommendations for AP deployment through two WLAN deployment scenarios.
In chapter 6, we discussed some implications <strong>of</strong> this study and possible directions for
future research. RSS is an important factor for AP placement. Many AP placement
projects are only based on RSS; however, over reliance on RSS may lead to wrong AP
