Background and Related Works<br />
This chapter provides a review <strong>on</strong> literature in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> signal strength and<br />
throughput measurement. We first provide a brief overview <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> IEEE 802.11<br />
standards. It provides an essential background <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WLAN architecture. We <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n provide<br />
a review <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> IEEE 802.11 covering both MAC and PHY layers. <strong>Fi</strong>nally, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recent<br />
studies in WLAN throughput, base stati<strong>on</strong> placement, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> radio signal,<br />
propagati<strong>on</strong> measurement and signal strength with its applicati<strong>on</strong> are discussed.<br />
2.1 Overview <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> IEEE 802.11 Standard<br />
The IEEE 802.11 standard was published in October, 1997. The standard covers both<br />
MAC protocol and physical layer. The initial standard <strong>on</strong>ly supports low data rates (1<br />
and 2 Mbps) and operates at 2.4GHz ISM band. The standard employs<br />
frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and direct-sequence spread spectrum<br />
(DSSS) techniques for radio transmissi<strong>on</strong> [13].<br />
