APs placement as well as provide an in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> AP configurations to meet different user requirements. The study also observes <strong>the</strong> optimum number <strong>of</strong> APs for a particular <strong>of</strong>fice setting. <strong>An</strong> additional contribution <strong>of</strong> this study is to propose some recommendations in terms <strong>of</strong> practical AP deployment. The WLAN capacity planning is also discussed. The structure <strong>of</strong> this dissertation is presented next. 1.2 Dissertation Structure The remainder <strong>of</strong> this report is organized as follows. In chapter 2, we report on literature review <strong>of</strong> IEEE 802.11 protocols and challenges in wireless propagation measurements. Chapter 3 describes <strong>the</strong> research methodology, with a comparison <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> computer simulation and analytical modeling methodologies. Chapter 4 reports on radio propagation measurements, including hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware requirements and measurement setup. In chapter 5, we present summary <strong>of</strong> experimental results. The research implications and future directions are discussed in chapter 6, and chapter 7 concludes <strong>the</strong> report. - 4 -
Chapter 2 Background and Related Works This chapter provides a review on literature in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> signal strength and throughput measurement. We first provide a brief overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IEEE 802.11 standards. It provides an essential background <strong>of</strong> WLAN architecture. We <strong>the</strong>n provide a review <strong>of</strong> IEEE 802.11 covering both MAC and PHY layers. Finally, <strong>the</strong> recent studies in WLAN throughput, base station placement, <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> radio signal, propagation measurement and signal strength with its application are discussed. 2.1 Overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IEEE 802.11 Standard The IEEE 802.11 standard was published in October, 1997. The standard covers both MAC protocol and physical layer. The initial standard only supports low data rates (1 and 2 Mbps) and operates at 2.4GHz ISM band. The standard employs frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) and direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) techniques for radio transmission [13]. - 5 -
