WLAN performance evaluati<strong>on</strong> and analysis can be performed by: (1) propagati<strong>on</strong><br />
measurement; (2) analytical modeling; and (3) computer simulati<strong>on</strong>. To get an insight<br />
into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> signal strength in a crowded <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice envir<strong>on</strong>ment, a radio propagati<strong>on</strong><br />
measurement is required. Propagati<strong>on</strong> measurement enables us to find <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />
between <strong>Wi</strong>-<strong>Fi</strong> link throughput and signal strength. Many factors affect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> received<br />
signal strength (RSS) in an indoor envir<strong>on</strong>ment, for example, multiple-path propagati<strong>on</strong><br />
and human moti<strong>on</strong> [12].<br />
The IEEE 802.11 standard provides various WLAN architectures and topologies for<br />
WLAN design (e.g. basic service set, extended service set, ad-hoc mode, infrastructure<br />
mode). Unlike normal AP mode, advanced APs could provide various AP c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong><br />
modes. <strong>Wi</strong>reless distributi<strong>on</strong> system (WDS) mode is example <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an advanced AP.<br />
Different operating modes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> APs may have different WLAN performance as well as<br />
implementati<strong>on</strong> cost. Careful c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WLAN c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> is needed because<br />
o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise it would impact WLAN performance, implementati<strong>on</strong> cost, and effective<br />
management <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> radio resources.<br />
The objective <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this dissertati<strong>on</strong> is discussed next.<br />
1.1 Objective <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> This Research Project<br />
The aim <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this research is to investigate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> signal strength <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wi</strong>-<strong>Fi</strong> link<br />
throughput in an obstructed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice envir<strong>on</strong>ment. We examine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ship between<br />
signal strength and <strong>Wi</strong>-<strong>Fi</strong> link throughput through propagati<strong>on</strong> measurements. Moreover,<br />
to provide a good signal coverage and throughput, we seek <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> optimal locati<strong>on</strong>s for<br />
