Abstract<br />

<strong>Wi</strong>reless local area networks (WLANs) play an increasingly significant role in<br />

providing ubiquitous network services in c<strong>on</strong>temporary society due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir mobility and<br />

cable free usage. It is more challenging to maintain higher throughput <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WLANs than<br />

wired networks. In this dissertati<strong>on</strong>, an experimental investigati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

signal strength <strong>on</strong> <strong>Wi</strong>-<strong>Fi</strong> link throughput in an obstructed <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice envir<strong>on</strong>ment is reported.<br />

Due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> complexity and unpredictable nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> radio signal propagati<strong>on</strong>, it is<br />

difficult to derive real and accurate signal strength and link throughput by analytical<br />

modeling and computer simulati<strong>on</strong>. The received signal strength (RSS), attenuati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

path loss depends <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> propagati<strong>on</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment. The locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an access point (AP)<br />

has a significant effect <strong>on</strong> WLAN performance. <str<strong>on</strong>g>An</str<strong>on</strong>g> appropriate AP placement is<br />

required to obtain greater performance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> WLANs. Through extensive radio propagati<strong>on</strong><br />

measurements, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results dem<strong>on</strong>strated both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ship <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> signal strengths with<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Wi</strong>-<strong>Fi</strong> link throughput; and optimum AP placement.<br />

This research carried out some significant c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s. <strong>Fi</strong>rstly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results revealed that<br />

not <strong>on</strong>ly WLAN throughput depends <strong>on</strong> RSS, but also <strong>on</strong> factors such as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distance<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> obstructi<strong>on</strong> between a transmitter and a receiver, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> radio<br />
