Preface and Acknowledgements
Volume, to the author, to Messrs A. P. Watt and Son,
J. K. Stephen, to the poet's representatives and to
Stephens), to the author and to Macmilian and Co. Ltd.
the same author), to the author and to Basil Blackwell
A. C. Swinburne) to the poet's executors and to
William Heinemann and Co., Ltd.
For The Curse (from Poems and Translations by
J. M. Synge) to George Allen and Unwin, Ltd.
For the poem from The Lady is Cold, by E. B. White,
to the author and Harper and Brothers.
If I have overlooked any claims to copyright, I sincerely
apologise. On the poems themselves, I have no
comment to offer. This is neither the time nor the place
for a serious discussion of the joke-evil and the dangers
of using comedy in place of tragedy. I leave the reader
to the simple pleasure of recognizing old acquaintances
and of grudgingly admitting new, and to the more
complex and perhaps greater pleasure of complaining
that I have not, after all, unearthed his own private
and unparalleled discovery.
