Anon: She was Poor
Standing on the bridge at midnight,
She says: 'Farewell, blighted Love.'
There's a scream, a splash—Good Heavens!
What is she a-doing of?
Tnen they drag her from the river,
Water from her clothes they wrang,
For they thought that she was drownded;
But the corpse got up and sang:
'It's the same the whole world over;
It's the poor that gets the blame,
It's the rich that gets the pleasure.
Isn't it a blooming shame?'
THE FLEAS
ANON
Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas and so ad infinitum.
And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater
fleas to go on;
While these again have greater still, and greater still,
and so on.
A. DE MORGAN
BEGINNING OF AN UNDERGRADUATE
POEM
(Completed by Dr Mansel)
When the sun's perpendicular rays
Illumine the depths of the sea—
The fishes, beginning to sweat,
Cry, Damn it, how hot we shall be!
