Even the people are picturesque.
On commercial shoots, “I cast real
people, rather than go through an
agency to hire models,” says Kunkel.
“The population is so diverse.
People dress as a way to express
their identity, and they’re so open to
trying things.”
This was Ansel Adams’s hometown,
where he received his bent nose as a
result of being thrown against a wall
in the 1906 earthquake. Most of
the city was destroyed, and other
than the redwoods, there isn’t much
here that’s older than 100 years.
Nonetheless, San Francisco’s visual
impact remains timeless.
