Analyzer (version 3.2) tests,
allowed only 0.17% barreling.
That’s about half as much as the
Pentax 14mm f/2.8 (not one of
the Limited line) and one-third
as much as the comparable
20mm f/2.8 full-frame Nikkor
lens that we tested back in 2003.
Light falloff was gone by
f/6.7 and, at the close-focusing
distance of 6.75 inches, the
maximum magnification was
1:6.33—both strong results
historically, yet about average for
an ultrawide prime today.
Compact and light (less
than half a pound), this lens is
a natural for travel, interiors,
group portraits, and landscapes.
Our field tests were unalloyed
pleasures, especially the street
shooting (see Showcase, page
10), another class of photography
in which this small, inconspicuous
lens excels.
Does $550 seem high for an
f/4? It shouldn’t necessarily.
Among Pentax primes, you could
opt for the $715 (street) 14mm
f/2.8. You’d reap a stop more
light, but with the 14mm you’d
get nearly twice the lens, physically,
and half the lens, optically.
Especially if you value a svelte
profile and (relatively) distortionfree
shooting, that $550 seems
