RODRiGO aLVaRez QUiCk tiP Spin City Play time is twice the fun with a camera this PiCture I took of my daughter Pia looks like it might have been diffi cult or even dangerous to take, but it was actually just plain fun. I started by spinning her without a camera, just to get in practice. Then, I tried spinning (and photographing) a doll to fi nd the perfect exposure and manualfocusing distance. Finally, it was Pia’s turn to model, and I think 30-seCOnD PhOtOshOP DOuble uP On laYers When creating an adjustment layer to alter, say, brightness or contrast, you can quickly double the effect if the adjustment doesn’t go far enough (as in the photo at near right). simply press control + J (command + J on a mac) with the layer selected. it instantly duplicates the layer, doubling the effect of the fi rst adjustment (at far right). if it’s too much, dial down your new layer’s opacity to achieve a look you like. you can tell by her expression that she enjoyed the role. If you want to give this a try, shoot in evenly diffused light, preset your exposure and focus, and do it on a soft surface. (With a toddler in one hand and a camera in the other, you probably won’t be able to break a fall.) I used a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and 17–85mm f/4–5.6 Canon EF IS lens. —Rodrigo Alvarez Alvarez found that in normal light and at ISO 400, a shutter speed of 1/60 sec blurred the background nicely but assured a sharp subject. befOre after The original image was overexposed, so we added an adjustment layer in Photoshop CS4 to darken it (detail, left). It still seemed too light, so we doubled the effect (right) with a quick keyboard shortcut. What’s This?
