The New Model 320A Monolight
By Jason Schneider
Flashpoint Monolights by Adorama are held in high esteem by
many working pros and serious enthusiasts because they provide
pro-caliber lighting performance, an array of useful features, and
outstanding reliability at a fraction of the cost of comparable units.
Now these rugged portable electronic flashes have been upgraded
for greater flexibility and convenience starting with the new compact,
lightweight, metal-bodied Model 320A. This dependable
150 Watt-Second strobe now has a user-replaceable Flash Tube
and Modeling Lamp, plus a faster recycling time of 1 to 1-1/2
seconds—great when you’re covering fast-paced events or trying
to capture the fleeting expressions of kids or special moments.
Happily, the new 320A retains all the other useful features that
made its predecessor a best-seller, including Stepless Power Output
Control from full power down to 1/32 power, action-freezing
flash duration from 1/600-1/1000 sec, a built-in slave trigger with
on-off switch, and a low sync voltage of only 6 volts that’s safe for
all film and digital cameras. It’s boxed with an efficient reflector, a
flashtube protector, plus power and sync cords. Incredibly it’s still
priced at only $99.95, making it a best buy in its class.
The self-contained Flashpoint Model 320A is the most compact
and economical monolight in the extensive Flashpoint line. Nevertheless,
this feather-light 3-pound unit provides a lot of pop for
the buck, delivering an impressive ISO 100 guide number of 118,
so you can stop down to get the extended depth of field you need
for product shots. Even more important, with the standard reflector,
its daylight-equivalent output provides an excellent balance
between pleasant diffusion and high definition—the perfect illumination
for a wide variety of professional shooting applications. If
you need more diffuse lighting for professional looking portraits of
brides and babies, or detailed close-ups of coins or other shiny objects,
just snap on the Flashpoint 16-inch Soft Reflector. Indeed,
the 320A, like all the units in the line, accepts a host of pro quality
Flashpoint accessories that let you build a system precisely configured
to your needs at modest cost. Or, if you prefer to start off
with a coordinated lighting outfit custom tailored to your shooting
requirements, check out the entire Flashpoint Monolight line of
enticingly priced kits that include heavy-duty light stands, umbrellas,
extra heads, and more.
Whichever way you go, it’s easy to achieve precise lighting
control and sophisticated studio effects with the Flashpoint
Monolight Model 320A, or any other Flashpoint model listed
on this page. Simply snap on the Flashpoint Four-Leaf Barndoors
to feather the light for a natural look, attach the Snoot,
to achieve portraits that look like they were shot in a highend
studio, or choose one of seven Flashpoint Soft Boxes.
Factor in the new, more robust, Flashpoint light stands and add
compatible reflectors, umbrellas, modeling lights, and flash tubes
to the mix and it becomes clear that Flashpoint is nothing less than
a fully articulated, high-value system of lighting that provides all the
performance, flexibility, and back-up support serious shooters want
and need. Take it from someone who has actually used it professionally,
Flashpoint is really good stuff—so get set to shoot pictures of
broad smiles when your friends, family and clients see the results.
Three Flashpoint monolights were used and the model was posed against a Belle Drape muslin backdrop.
The main light, a Flashpoint 620A with a square soft box was placed at camera right; fill at camera left was
provided by a Flashpoint 320A with an umbrella attached. A third Flashpoint 320A with snoot was placed
behind the model and to the left.
