R j Reynolds began its Camel GT sponsorship program in 1972 . and has
been a major IMSA corporate sponsor every year since, with the exception of
The series attracted record entries and record spectator turnouts for early
1981 races . and all indications are that the Sept . 15-16 Camel GT at Michigan
International Speedway will be a pivotal race in determining the series
championships Michigan s Camel GT will be the 15th event in the 17-race
The Kelly American Challenge is a series of road races held exclusively for
American cars each season at some of North America s best known road rac .
ing facilities. The races are organized and sanctioned by the International
Motor Sports Association IIMSAI and sponsored by Kelly Services, the Kelly
Girl People .
The 'American'' in Kelly American Challenge refers to the cars which are
mass .produced American sedans such as the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Camaro
and Monte Carlo, Dodge Miranda . Ford Mustang, Oldsmobile Cutlass and
Pontiac Firebird .
Although these cars are prepared for racing and run on racing tires, the
original bodywork is retained so that the cars look stock'' or the way they
would look in a dealer's showroom for maximum spectator identification .
Most exterior modifications are for safety purposes .
The cars are powered by heavy duty V-6 or V-8 engines producing 400 to
450 horsepower and top speeds of around 170 miles per hour . Weight and
carburetion requirements are used to equalize competition between the large
and small engines .
A special attempt has been made to keep the cost of race preparation low to
make competition possible for many people . Kelly cars are built from parts
available from automobile dealers or aftermarket suppliers . The restriction
on custom-built parts helps to lower the cost of preparing a car and promotes
close competition on the track.
Several women compete regularly in the series and have finished as high
as second and third, for the Kelly American Challenge offers special incen .
tives to women drivers. A special bonus is awarded to the highest-placing
woman at each event, and at the end of the season, the three most successful
women drivers share an $8,000 portion of the $70,000 points fund .
