NBC Sports has played many pioneering roles during it's relationship with
. NBC was the first network to ever present live coverage of a 500-mile
CART
Indy Car race with the history-making telecast of the CART Michigan 500 at
MIS in July, 1981 . It was that race that also marked another major
breakthrough for televised Indy Car racing as driver Bill Alsup carried in his
,at a tiny Hitachi i2" x6" x6"1 television camera that captured live for the ran
ing enthusiasts watching the race at home the actual sensation of rocketing
down a MIS straightaway at 200-plus miles per hour .
The implementation of the on-board camera, or CART-CAM as it has come
to be known, is symbolic of NBC Sports' on-going effort to capture and
dramatize the single most exciting dimension of Indy Car racing-speed .
Now approved for a position new the rollbar adjacent to the cockpit, the
CART-CAM has drawn enthusiastic response from fans, drivers, and owners
who recognize the potential impact it has on the sport's popularity growth in
the coming years.
Providing the finest in-depth coverage of auto racing, no matter what the
variety, requires a broadcast and production team knowledgeable in all
aspects of the sport . NBC Sports is indeed fortunate to have such a team.
Behind the microphone anchoring all of NBC Sports' motor sports coverage
is Paul Page, widely known and recognized as the voice of the Indianapolis
500 over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network . Working in
tandem with Page is highly respected racing broadcaster and writer Gary
Gerould . Popular Olympic decathalon champ Bruce Jenner, a true racing enthusiast,
who is actively involved in various levels of competitive racing, frequently
joins the coverage team .
