NBC Sports has played many pioneering roles during it's relationship with
. NBC was the first network to ever present live coverage of a 500-mile
CART
Indy Car race with the history-making telecast of the CART Michigan 500 at
MIS in July, 1981 . It was that race that also marked another major
breakthrough for televised Indy Car racing as driver Bill Alsup carried in his
,at a tiny Hitachi i2" x6" x6"1 television camera that captured live for the ran
ing enthusiasts watching the race at home the actual sensation of rocketing
down a MIS straightaway at 200-plus miles per hour .
The implementation of the on-board camera, or CART-CAM as it has come
to be known, is symbolic of NBC Sports' on-going effort to capture and
dramatize the single most exciting dimension of Indy Car racing-speed .

CART-CAM has drawn enthusiastic response from fans, drivers, and owners
who recognize the potential impact it has on the sport's popularity growth in
the coming years.
