On a cool. rainy afternoon in December of 1970, R .J . Reynolds Td
Co . and the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing 1NASCMI
an announcement that would change the face of auto racing .
The two groups said that NASCAR's Grand National Division wq
sponsored by Winston cigarettes beginning with the 1971 season .
Both NASCAR and Reynolds Tobacco are convinced that this ant e
ment was the beginning of a "perfect auto racing marriage," one th
benefitted both the sport and Reynolds Tobacco.
As Winston begins its 14th year as sponsor of the elite NASCAR W,
Cup Series, the company and the sanctioning body are quick to point ot
the series has become the world leader in prestige, attendance and a
paid to the competitors .
This year, the payoff will exceed the S 10 million mark and the 30 W
Cup events are expected to attract more than 1 .7 million people .
"The sport's growth since Winston became the sponsor is pheno
says 1983 Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison . "I don't think anya
that were part of the sport in the late 1960s would have dreamed tha
would have come as far as we have in the last 10 years . And the big
reason is the national exposure that the sport has received due to com
like Winston."
NASCAR President Bill France Jr . agrees as he says . "It had always
felt that you needed to be automotive related to get into racing . R .J . Rey
