A huge fan of rock music, it was Phil’s belief that UK radio was neglecting adult rock
music fans which led him to spearhead the development of The Arrow as a digital
format for the MXR consortium, in which Chrysalis is a key shareholder. Chrysalis’s
subsequent decision to roll out The Arrow beyond MXR’s regions and into London and
Central Scotland highlights both a corporate and personal commitment to the concept
behind The Arrow.
Manchester born and bred, Phil has an outstanding record of commercial radio
management since joining BRMB in 1980 as a graduate trainee. After hugely successful
stints at Midlands Radio and XTRA-AM in Birmingham, and Radio Aire and Magic 828 in
Leeds, Phil joined Chrysalis Radio as a founding director in 1994. As Managing
Director/Launch Director, Phil masterminded the launch and start-up operational phase
of both 100.7 Heart FM in the West Midlands and Heart 106.2 in London. He has played a
major role in establishing Chrysalis Radio as one of the leading new entrants in the UK
radio industry, and was promoted to the role of Chief Executive in June 1999.
Phil is also active in the development of digital radio. He is Chairman of the MXR
multiplex company and also sits on the board of the Digital Radio Development Bureau
(DRDB).
Phil has had an active role on a number of wider industry bodies. He has held full board
membership of the RadioCentre (previously the CRCA) for 8 years, having previously
also been a board director of the RAB.
As one of the world’s biggest Bruce Springsteen fans, Phil’s happiest moment was
watching The Boss play ‘Independence Day’ on 4 July at Wembley Stadium. His
favourite rock album of all time is ‘Hotel California’ by The Eagles.
