New Romantic Seen as a more relaxing type of music, ideal for winding down to. I would like it in the evening coming home, not in the morning. New Wave Although a popular genre with some, overall responses were fairly neutral. This genre did bring back fond memories, however. I just remember going off my head at a disco and you just couldn’t keep still at it. Northern Soul A few respondents were real fans of this music, with others not listening to it much at all, but keen on knowing more about it. There were some monster hits. I want to know more about it, and so again I am open to it. Heavy Metal This genre was seen as something that would fit in well with the rest of the music played, however only in small quantities and something not to play too late in the evening because it is much louder. Definitely my type of music. To me it is not night time music. It is not after 9 o’clock music. Forming a suitable music station Overall respondents’ core music taste was for classic rock but with added extras; listeners were being discerning within the pods as to what they liked, but essentially the music they enjoy always has the common elements mentioned earlier that make music ‘good’ to them. They want a deeper play list from the chosen artist, not obscure music but a range, including more than just their biggest hits. They don’t want endless variety but their demand is for ‘rock plus’, the classics combined with the ‘good’ half of the charts that they have always liked. Here are a couple of quotes from respondents after hearing all of the pods. I think that what you have got there, if that is our radio station, it is a lively one isn’t it…I think it’s an upbeat kind of selection. I would listen. If that was on air I would tune into it, without a doubt. Presenters must be knowledgeable about the music Although the presenter is not the most important aspect of respondents’ ideal station it is crucial that the presenter is passionate and has a clear knowledge of the music they are representing. They are not keen on presenters who talk between songs about irrelevant stuff and feel it’s unnecessary. 62
I find that Terry Wogan can waffle on a little bit too long as far as I’m concerned. I think a lot of stations basically you have disc jockeys going on there that have not a clue what they are on about. Because it is like you have got someone playing 70s, 80s and…he was in his nappies at the time. They have got to love the music. Keeping it local Respondents were keen on making sure that the station is local and represents Manchester’s music tastes along with having Mancunian personalities. Somebody who knows and can tell you what is going on in Manchester. I think somebody who is local and knows the area. More local, Manchester based artists would be well received by this audience. You have got to have some Manchester. Some Manchester stuff like Inspiral Carpets. Non-stop music This is something respondents’ spontaneously said they would like to hear more of on the radio. There aren’t enough stations providing a non-stop music hour or evening where it is all about the music and nothing else. I was just thinking they used to have a non-stop hour on the radio, on Radio 1 and various stations…which is a good thing but they don’t do enough of it. Utilities These are considered to be sufficiently serviced in the market, however it is understood that they are important to listeners. Mundane things like daily news and travel and locals news is important as well. They are happy to keep these necessities short and sweet, just a few minutes every hour or so. Headlines…I don’t need to know anything else. Local weather…it can just be a line can’t it? With sport, as long as the listeners know what is happening it doesn’t need to be indepth. Sports deadlines, results, any transfer news like that.
