With the addition of veterans Paul Silas and Connie Hawkins, the
young Suns enjoyed a 23-game turnaround and their first-ever trip to the 39-43
NBA playoffs. Silas, obtained in a trade with Atlanta for Gary Gregor, gave
the team additional inside strength as he averaged nearly 12 rebounds. Following a
legendary two-year stint in the ABA and one year with the world-famous Harlem
Globetrotters, Hawkins provided amazing offensive talents.
On January 2, with the Suns at 15-23, Head Coach Johnny Kerr resigned just five hours
prior to that night’s game against San Diego. General Manager Jerry Colangelo took over as
head coach and led the Suns to a 24-20 mark over the rest of the regular season and a bid
to the NBA Playoffs.
The Suns drew the mighty L.A. Lakers in the first round and dropped the opening game in
Los Angeles, 112-128. But the Suns showed character as they picked up the next three
games behind superb play from Silas, Hawkins and Gail Goodrich. However, the likes of Wilt
Chamberlain, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor were too much for the Suns as the Lakers clinched
the series in seven games.
Dick Van Arsdale made his second appearance in the All-Star Game along with the
team’s scoring leader Hawkins. The Hawk also earned All-NBA First Team honors.
