English–Combination Classes<br />

ARTS & HUMANITIES DIVISION<br />

The English Department’s “combination classes”<br />

give students the opportunity to approach two<br />

topics at the same time to improve their skills<br />

and understanding of both. For example, in a 10credit<br />

composition and literature combination,<br />

students read, discuss, analyze, and write about<br />

significant literary works. The Department recommends<br />

that students in combination classes have<br />

college-level placement.<br />

COOL–ENGLISH COMPOSITION<br />

AND LITERATURE • 10 CR<br />

The “Cool” attitude which is so pervasive in<br />

American Media is only 50 years old, but its roots<br />

are much older. We will map out Cool’s origins in<br />

European, Asian, and African cultures through<br />

various movements in American music, cinema,<br />

and literature.<br />

English as a Second Language<br />

DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION<br />

DEVED 061 and DEVED 062 are courses specifically<br />

designed to help ESL students improve<br />

academic reading and writing skills.<br />

This 11 or 12-credit combined course prepares English-as-a-<br />

Second-Language students for credit courses by building reading<br />

comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills. Students<br />

participate in writing work which coordinates with reading, speaking<br />

and listening activities.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement by assessment.<br />

Fee: $16.90.<br />

ESL<br />

The English as a Second Language classes are<br />

designed for immigrants, refugees, permanent<br />

residents, and U.S. citizens. People on student or<br />

tourist visas are not eligible and should contact<br />

International Student Programs at (425) 564-2341.<br />

These classes have a $25 tuition charge per student<br />

per quarter with a waiver for students who cannot<br />

pay. Enrollment is continuous: If a student drops<br />

out, the opening is filled from a waiting list. Come<br />

to R230 or call (425) 564-2341 for more information.<br />

Job Preparedness<br />

Prerequisite: Must be eligible to work in the U.S. Call (425) 564-<br />

For intermediate/advanced level ESL. Students<br />

learn to write a résumé, complete application<br />

forms, and find employment.<br />
