Distance Ed Online Classes http://distance-ed.bcc.ctc.edu/ or (425) 564-2438 1 What is Distance Education? Distance Education at BCC is designed for students who prefer to learn at home, according to their own schedules. Distance Education students get the same breadth and depth of material and earn the same college credit as students in classrooms do. Distance Education students need the self-motivation and self-discipline to focus, set goals, and complete course assignments on time without daily face-to-face contact with an instructor. Although you save time commuting to campus, you still need to put in the hours a college-level course requires to absorb material, read textbooks, and complete assignments and exams. Is Distance Education right for you? Take the self-assessment test online at http://distance-ed.bcc.ctc.edu/. 2 Distance Education Options Telecourses (page 43) Televised courses at BCC combine video programs, textbooks, study guides, and on-campus orientation and review sessions. What do you need to succeed in a telecourse? ■ ■ Attendance is mandatory for on-campus orientation and exam sessions. Some courses have other mandatory attendance requirements, especially for lab sciences and foreign languages. Check the course listings for details. A way to view to video materials. (See page 43 for viewing options.) Online courses (pages 43-47) Online classes are conducted over the Internet. Students must access each online class daily for assignments, discussion, etc. Successful online learning requires: ■ The motivation and self-discipline to focus, set goals, and complete assignments on time without daily face-to-face contact with an instructor. What do you need to succeed in online learning? ■ ■ ■ ■ The ability to learn from written materials, including lectures, e-mails, threaded discussions, and chat rooms. A good working knowledge of your computer and your Internet Service Provider (ISP), including e-mail. The ability to learn and use WebCT Vista and specialized software when required, for our web-based courses. Appropriate hardware and software. (See information for online students on page 43). 3 How to Get Started ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ If you are new to BCC, apply for admissions (www.bcc.ctc.edu or see page 51). Register in person or online at www.bcc.ctc.edu. Pay fees (Additional fees apply in some cases, e.g., science labs). Read How to Start Fall Quarter at: http://distance-ed.bcc.ctc.edu (some online classes have specific information; check the listings for details). Buy textbooks. OAS? TAC? OAS? TAC? Item Numbers & Sections Most Distance Ed classes have two item numbers for the same class. Here’s what the code letters mean: O = online T = telecourse A, B, C, etc. = the section designator S = state-support basis C = contract basis The section you should choose and the per-class costs for it will depend on your Washington State residency and your U.S. residency and citizenship status. Telecourses See the departmental listings for details about the credit classes outlined here: days, times, rooms, instructors, prerequisites, etc. Additional information about each course and instructor is available on the Distance Ed. Website at http://distance-ed.bcc.ctc.edu. TELECOURSES Information for telecourse students Telecourse instruction incorporates video programs, textbooks, study guides and/or lab materials, and on-campus review sessions with BCC instructors. Attendance is required at the orientation (first review) session and all sessions where exams will be given. Individual instructors may require additional attendance. Attendance is mandatory at the review sessions for lab science and foreign language courses. There are several ways you can view the video programs. To view the programs on The College Channel, the college campus television station, you need access to Comcast Cable. The College Channel is broadcast throughout King County on Channel 28, except within the Seattle city limits. The same programs are available for viewing and/or overnight checkout from the Library Media Center on campus. There is no charge to check out these videotapes. Students registered in a telecourse may also rent sets of videotapes for a non-refundable fee of $30/set/quarter. The tapes must be returned at the end of the quarter. Questions? You must access each class daily via an internet account including e-mail and web access via a server with a Browser that reads JavaScript. Textbooks for classes are available from the BCC Bookstore.
