Form study groups. It breaks up the work
and gives you different perspectives, which
will help you understand and remember
more information.
Don’t fall behind on homework. Do your
homework during the week and enjoy
your weekends!
Take a mix of core studies and enjoyable electives.
Make your experience fun and balanced.
Spread out your study time, and school will be
much easier.
Get your textbooks early and actually do the reading.
Go to the Student Programs office in C212 and find
a student group you’d enjoy being part of (there are
dozens). That way you’ll make a lot of friends. It’s easy
and fun, and no pressure!
Ask other students for information – they are a good
resource. Show up for class every day, or you might
miss something critical, and it will be on the test!
Make a friend in each of your classes. Keep your
mind open. Sit near the front so you stay focused.
The most important thing to do on the first day of
class is: SHOW UP! Even for online classes.
Put contact info on a label on your flash drive or in a
Word.doc in it. If you leave it in a computer, someone
will know who it belongs to.
Turn your cell phone off when you are in class.
If you are working 20 hours a week or more, don’t take
more than two classes (unless one is a “fun” elective).
Briefly review and reflect on your notes each day just
before class to re-orient yourself to the topic.
Turn in all your work and assignments, even if not all
are brilliant. Talk to your instructor before the due date
if you are getting bogged down.
For every one hour you spend in class, plan to spend at
least two hours studying or doing homework.
Instructors cannot guess when you are having trouble
until it’s too late. Talk to them and find the resources
to help you get back on track. Help is available, and it’s
okay to ask.
Experiment with your learning style and study habits.
If you usually start a paper the night before it’s due,
try starting earlier. Leave your comfort zone and try
to refine your learning process so you can
achieve success and repeat it.
■ Take HD 120 - Learning Strategies for Student
Success (it transfers in most degrees)
for pointers and practice on how to take
notes and tests and manage time. Great
class, really helpful!
■ Your brain functions at only 60% after
45 minutes of study. Take a break and
take a 15-minute walk, then come back,
refreshed, ready to take in more info.
■
Do yoga. Pray. Relax. Eat breakfast.
Get some sleep. Drink plenty of water.
Lots of caffeine!
