Harold Kincaid<br />

Notes<br />

1 <strong>Philosophy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social sciences is a broad area and it is not possible <strong>to</strong> do justice <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> entire field anymore than a single article could do so for <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

natural sciences. This survey is necessarily selective, based on what <strong>to</strong>pics seem <strong>to</strong> have<br />

received <strong>the</strong> most attention and no doubt on <strong>the</strong> interests and knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author.<br />

Not discussed in any detail are <strong>the</strong> following <strong>to</strong>pics: issues in <strong>the</strong> philosophy <strong>of</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

concerning laws, objectivity, narrative, and <strong>the</strong> like (Martin, 1989; Roth, 1994); <strong>the</strong><br />

fact/value distinction in <strong>the</strong> social sciences (Root, 1993); issues concerning <strong>the</strong> indeterminacy<br />

<strong>of</strong> translation as it relates <strong>to</strong> debates in <strong>the</strong> social sciences (Roth, 1987;<br />

Bohman, 1991; Kincaid, 1996); on<strong>to</strong>logy and metaphysics <strong>of</strong> groups (Ruben, 1985;<br />

Gilbert, 1992); game <strong>the</strong>ory and decision <strong>the</strong>ory (Bicchieri, 1993), and no doubt o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

areas as well.<br />
