Mocap is gaining popularity in many fields. Video games use the mocap tech-<br />
nology to simulate the characters like athletes, and dancers to gain more realism. For<br />
multi-player games mocap is very useful to simulate the inter-actions between the<br />
players since mocap has the ability to preserve the realism in actions and emotions.<br />
Motion capture is used in movies for CG effects and to create computer generated<br />
characters. Motion-based animation is essential for creating characters that move<br />
realistically. Some famous movie characters such as Gollum, the Mummy and King<br />
Kong were created using mocap. The 2006 Academy Awards had two out of three<br />
nominees for best animated film as “Monster House” and “Happy Feet” which used<br />
mocap technology. The recently released movie “Avatar” used Motion capture to<br />
animate characters and environment is a big release.<br />
Motion capture can be used for many clinical applications in medicine. Researchers<br />
use mocap to analyze the behavior of patients which can be helpful in determining the<br />
traits related to the disease. An examples is the behavioral analysis patients suffering<br />
from Parkinson’s disease. Another example is gait Analysis which is the process of<br />
analyzing the movement patterns of different people while walking. An in-depth gait<br />
analysis requires the knowledge of elementary spatio-temporal parameters such as<br />
walking speed, hip and knee angles, stride length and width, time of support, among<br />
others. To obtain this information, a 3D human motion capture system has to be<br />
used.<br />
Motion capture is a very good tool to train animators. While access to motion cap-<br />
ture is not a substitute for developing good art skills and good traditional character<br />
