SAFETY ALERT
National Fire Prevention Week — October 9–15, 2005
Each October, the nation observes National Fire Prevention
Week. This year’s observance will be conducted
October 9 through 15. Please join in supporting this effort
by giving special attention to identifying and correcting conditions
that may cause fires. In 2004, almost 4,000 people
in the United States died as the result of fires. More than 80
percent of these deaths occurred in the home. In the Postal
Service, over the last 6 years, the average number of
fires per year in buildings and vehicles was 498. These
tragedies are grim and unnecessary. Fire safety is always
important. Fire Prevention Week provides us with the added
opportunity to identify and correct conditions at work and
at home that may cause fires and tragic losses.
You can help prevent fires by taking these actions at
work:
Practice good housekeeping (maintain a neat and
clean work area).
Obey smoking regulations.
