20.1. Global attributes<br />

defined by the XML standard itself.<br />

text, and provides the applicable<br />

osisID: osisID="Matt.1.1". It must not be used<br />

<strong>on</strong> elements that merely refer to, or discuss, a<br />

can<strong>on</strong>ically-referenceable text. For those cases,<br />

use the annoteWork and osisRef attributes,<br />

instead. See the secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> reference systems for<br />

details <strong>on</strong> the form required for this attribute's<br />

value.<br />

can<strong>on</strong>ical true | false opti<strong>on</strong>al The can<strong>on</strong>ical attribute identifies the element<br />

bearing it as c<strong>on</strong>taining actual text of the work<br />

being encoded, as opposed to annotati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

commentary, inserted headings, header<br />

metadata, notes, and other (n<strong>on</strong>-can<strong>on</strong>ical)<br />

informati<strong>on</strong>. Its value inherits in the same way<br />

as xml:lang. That is, the value applies to all<br />

descendant elements except where overridden.
