The type attribute <strong>on</strong> the name element is used to identify the type of name that is being<br />

encoded. This is important for searching softw<str<strong>on</strong>g>are</str<strong>on</strong>g> to be able to distinguish geographic<br />

names from pers<strong>on</strong>al names or to create lists of particular types of names. Note that the<br />

values for the type attribute must be entered exactly as shown, all others must use the "x-<br />

" extensi<strong>on</strong> mechanism.<br />

If the user needs to record a type of name in the text that is not covered by these values,<br />

please use the <str<strong>on</strong>g>OSIS</str<strong>on</strong>g> attribute extensi<strong>on</strong> mechanism, "x-" in fr<strong>on</strong>t of the name of your<br />

value for this attribute. Such additi<strong>on</strong>s systems should be brought to the attenti<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>OSIS</str<strong>on</strong>g> editors.<br />

• geographic Name of a place or locati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• holiday Name of a holiday or festival.<br />

• n<strong>on</strong>human Name of any n<strong>on</strong>human other than the Deity. For the latter, see<br />

divineName.<br />

• pers<strong>on</strong> Name of any pers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• ritual Name of a ritual.<br />

20.2.9. notes<br />

The type attribute <strong>on</strong> the note element is used to identify the type of note that appears in<br />

the text. This is important for searching softw<str<strong>on</strong>g>are</str<strong>on</strong>g> to be able to find notes of a particular<br />

type, or to suppress notes that <str<strong>on</strong>g>are</str<strong>on</strong>g> not of interest for a particular reader or purpose. Note<br />

that the values for the type attribute must be entered exactly as shown, all others must use<br />

the "x-" extensi<strong>on</strong> mechanism.<br />

• allusi<strong>on</strong> Use for a note that records an allusi<strong>on</strong> in the text. Ex: "Call me Ishmael"<br />

in a modern novel is an allusi<strong>on</strong> to Moby Dick by Herman Melville. The text does<br />

not cite Melville but the encoder notes the allusi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• alternative Use for a note that provides an alternative to the main text, usually<br />

with a translati<strong>on</strong>. Differs from variant, see below, in that variant is of the original<br />

text, not the translati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• background Use for a note that provides background informati<strong>on</strong>, usually about<br />

unfamiliar practices, terms or measures.<br />

• citati<strong>on</strong> Use for a note that c<strong>on</strong>tains a formal citati<strong>on</strong> to another work, modern<br />

footnote is a good example.<br />

• crossReference Use for a note that provides a cross reference to material relevant<br />

to the issue under discussi<strong>on</strong> in the text.<br />

• devoti<strong>on</strong>al Use for a note that details devoti<strong>on</strong>al aspects of text or issues in the<br />

text under discussi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

• exegesis Use for a note that makes the case for a particular interpretati<strong>on</strong> of a text.
