Do not make any statements to media personnel during or after a critical<br />

event without the expressed permission of the Principal.<br />

Refer all media inquiries to the Principal, his/her designee, or the Media<br />

Staging area.<br />

Notify the Principal whenever a media representative contacts you.<br />

Media communications will be facilitated through the Superintendent at the media<br />

staging area.<br />

C.4. BASIC RESPONSE TO ALL SCHOOL EMERGENCIES<br />

Although each incident is unique, the following checklist provides general actions to<br />

consider <strong>and</strong>/or implement when facing an emergency on campus. Specific<br />

situations are covered in more detail in the incident protocols.<br />

Principal Response<br />

Take a deep breath, don’t panic, <strong>and</strong> verify the information you have.<br />

Determine whether to call 911, determine what level of response is warranted<br />

prior to calling 911<br />

Contact the <strong>Safe</strong>ty Director <strong>and</strong> report the incident.<br />

Contact the Superintendent’s Office <strong>and</strong> report the incident <strong>and</strong> the level of<br />

appropriate response.<br />

Activate the <strong>Crisis</strong> Response Team <strong>and</strong> Incident Comm<strong>and</strong> System (ICS), if<br />

necessary, using the procedures in your school’s <strong>Crisis</strong> Response <strong>Plan</strong>.<br />

Assign duties as needed:<br />

a. <strong>Safe</strong>ty Officer (overall safety conditions of the campus)<br />

b. <strong>Public</strong> Information Officer (media relations, contact)<br />

c. Liaison Officer (coordinates with outside agencies)<br />

d. <strong>Plan</strong>ning Chief (incident logs, evaluate the information)<br />

e. Operations Chief (student accounting <strong>and</strong> release, facilities,<br />

medical, Response <strong>and</strong> Recovery Phase operations, food <strong>and</strong> water)<br />

f. Logistics Chief (communications <strong>and</strong> supplies)<br />
