Staff Response<br />
Activate fire alarm.<br />
If a fire is detected, report the exact location of the fire to the main office.<br />
Evacuate to designated area, take rosters <strong>and</strong> emergency evacuation kits.<br />
Close room doors, but do not lock them.<br />
Assist any individuals with special needs in your area in evacuating.<br />
Once evacuees have reached the evacuation site, determine that all students are<br />
present. Provide the name(s) of any missing student(s) to the Principal or his/her<br />
designee.<br />
G.5. Utility Failure<br />
Definition: A utility failure is the interruption in the supply of electricity, telephone<br />
service, natural gas, sewage or water services to the facility.<br />
Alert Signal: A plain language announcement over the public address system (PA) or<br />
personal notification as appropriate.<br />
Principal Response<br />
Contact the Maintenance Department <strong>and</strong> report the outage.<br />
Notify the <strong>Safe</strong>ty Director.<br />
Notify the Superintendent’s office <strong>and</strong> provide status updates as needed.<br />
Notify staff.<br />
Determine if it is safe to conduct normal activities, <strong>and</strong> notify staff of the<br />
appropriate course of action.<br />
In the event of a gas leak, order an evacuation <strong>and</strong> open windows. Use bomb<br />
threat evacuation sites. Do not allow the use of open flames such as matches<br />
or c<strong>and</strong>les due to possible gas leaks in the area.<br />
In the event of a power outage, send all students to supervised classrooms<br />
<strong>and</strong> campus sites with access to emergency lighting.<br />
In the event of a power outage, assist food service staff in securing<br />
refrigerated food storage units if power cannot be promptly restored. In<br />
coordination with the Office of Child Nutrition, determine that food is safe for<br />
consumption before it is used if the power remains off for an extended period of<br />
time.<br />
Staff Response<br />
Notify the Principal of the utility failure.<br />
Consult with the Principal as to the safety of continuing normal activities as<br />
appropriate.<br />
Central Office Response<br />
Maintenance will contact the utility company to determine an estimation of time<br />
to recovery of services.<br />
Child Nutrition will communicate with the school cafeteria manager to<br />
determine best course of action for meal preparation.<br />
