• Retrograde amnesia
– loss of old memories
• some retrograde amnesia is associated with
anterograde amnesia
– the time period just before the injury is forgotten
(temporally graded)
– depends upon abruptness
• Korsakoff’s and Alzheimer’s
–memory consolidation (Squire)
• Hippocampally dependent
– Memories are distributed throughout the cortex
– Hippocampus ties together the various components
– with time, the cortex can learn to do this on its own
– this process is called memory consolidation
• forgetting curves and amnesia
