A feel good story for all of
the bowling community.
By Del Ballard Jr.
Sean Swanson from Springfield
Mo. was lying in bed one
night and felt a lump in his
stomach. When he stood
up, it wasn’t there.
But when he laid
back down he could
feel it again. So he
told his wife Angie,
who is a nurse
supervisor, and
on to the doctors
they went. That was
March 27 2012. The
doctor felt the mass
and then sent
him to get a
scan. It was
confirmed,
he had a
mass. So the
doctor thought the best course
of action was to remove it
immediately. So they scheduled
surgery on Thursday April 5th.
The mass had grown to the size
of a grapefruit and two other
smaller masses were found on
his bowel. The mass was sent
to the Mayo clinic for biopsy
where two weeks later it was
diagnosed as Pleomorphic
Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
The Oncologist and surgeon
recommended he go to M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center in
Houston for a treatment plan.
They were there one day and
their plan was chemotherapy
with no guarantee it would
work. He started chemo July 10.
Now here is why I find this
story so compelling. Remember
the date March 27th? He
continued to bowl during all
this. March 31st he bowled the
Missouri state tournament and
won scratch singles. He was
supposed to bowl in the PBA
Tournament of Champions the
week of April 5th but had the
surgery instead. Then before he
started chemo he bowled the
Greater Ozarks tournament and
won the team event. Then he
went to Baton Rouge to bowl
the USBC Open Championships,
shot 300 in doubles and
finished fourth along with
shooting 2100 in all events! He
got back July 6th and started
chemo on July 10.
Now I’ve been through a
little bit of this myself and I
know when I was dealing with
my issues and treatments there
wasn’t any way I could have
bowled with all of this on my
mind!
Here’s some Q&A with Sean
on how he has dealt with his
cancer, and continues to fight on.
Del Ballard: Sean how in
the world did you deal with all
of this and put it out of your
mind and still compete at the
level that you did?
Sean Swanson: I can’t
really answer how I put
it out of my head or deal
with the possibility of
life or death during
this. But I can tell
you what I have
around me and
maybe that is the
answer. Obviously
it starts with my
wife Angie. Who
has been incredible
throughout as a wife and
mother since the discovery of
the mass. The greatest bonus
is she is a nurse supervisor for
the hospital I attended. With
her knowledge, there never has
been a surprise with what the
doctors might say. She and I
have already discussed what
diagnosis, treatment plan or
Just Paying
Attention By Mark London
Mark@TheBowlingNews.net
The USBC announced its
Hall of Fame Class of 2013 two
weeks ago, and as promised,
I will now reveal my choices.
Nothing too complex here. All
seven listed are worthy of induction,
I chose Lynda Barnes,
Larry Laub, David Ozio, and
Steve Cook.
Along with Liz Johnson and
Kelly Kulick, Barnes bridges
the gap from the PWBA to
present day with amazing
performances in women’s
events as well as showing the
men a thing or two.
Barnes is one of the trio of
women bowlers whom history
will look back as it does now
on the three named Anthony,
Roth, and Holman. Their impact?
Like many pop culture
contemporaries, you know
them by their first names.
Seriously, Lynda, Liz, and Kelly
could and should have been in
the HoF five years ago. Those
three should just list what they
haven’t accomplished on the
lanes. It’s a much shorter list.
Larry Laub has won in the
70s and 2000s on the PBA
and PBA Senior (now PBA50)
National Tours. Even with his
unique release of quietly laying
the ball onto the lane he made
all the coverstocks work from
rubber to resin.
Steve Cook was the first
successful power lefthander on
tour with 15 wins, six of them
against fellow lefties, with
three of those against some
guy named Earl Anthony. His
crowning moment occurred in
1981 as he joined Don Johnson
as only the second bowler to
take a perfect game to the
tenth frame in the Tournament
of Champions title match.
Why David Ozio is not
already enshrined is a mystery
to me, but the well-practiced
pro from Vidor via Beaumont
amazed us all in a career year
of 1991, snapping off a ToC
crown enroute to PBA Player
of the Year. He set the then
four-game TV scoring record
with a 1,050 while winning the
1995 AMF Dick Weber Classic.
As a senior player, he won the
2004 Senior U.S. Open as well
as PBA
Senior Rookie of the Year.
Unwritten rule or not, age
45 is the final threshold for
those qualified years before. To
me, if one exceeds reasonable
qualifications, like Liz and
Kelly, put them in and let them
enjoy it no matter the age.
Former BPAA CEO Don
Harris Passes away at 60
Don Harris, former executive
director of BPAA, passed
away Sunday,
December 23 from
complications
after suffering a
stroke the previous
Tuesday. He was
60.
Don headed the BPAA from
January 1996 - September 1999
after serving as head of the Na-
to save it. Bob Learn had a
TV 800 series in his 1996 PBA
Flagship Open win games of
300-280-270-279, for an 850 and
1129, setting the current three
and four-game TV records. CBD
has the current consecutive TV
strikes record, 20-in-a-row in
the PBA 2009 Womens Series
Showdown, breaking RobLaw’s
17-bagger mark.
And as promised for those of
you scoring at home, this year’s
target scores were Kelly Kulick
with 743 and Pete Weber 626.
Only Tennelle Milligan had a
higher women’s score of 758 in
2000.
Now back to the nuts and
bolts of what this column
is about; media coverage.
For the ESPN PBA telecasts,
Lon McEachern is no doubt
prepared, but seems not as
familiar with the game. Not
like everyone aspires to be a
bowling announcer, but as one
with experience, it sounds like
me describing poker. But it is,
however, only after three TV
shows. My guess is he’s trying
to refine his comments while
getting more comfortable with
Randy Pedersen’s style. More
on that later.
Even with Jack Black talking
about a bowling-themed
movie that is not the only one
currently in production. In and
around Louisville, Kentucky
filming is wrapping up on a
film called, “Splits.”
According to the production
teams’ website, VSM Entertainment,
“Splits is a fun, PG-13
comedy in the style of Caddyshack
or Dodgeball, where
a group of friends compete in
the Lebowskifest Championship
bowling tournament.” Pretty
tall task to include topics and
concepts from all three of those
laughfests. No word when the
film is due to hit a multiplex
near you. We’ll keep you
posted.
Karin Ciesiolka
Last month’s high female
was Karin Ciesiolka with a
256-288-257 for an 802 series
in the Friday’s Best league at
Hallmark Lanes in Killeen, TX.
Karin is the Promotions Director
at Hallmark Lanes. Her two
daughters, Sierra and Shyanne
are both fulltime bowlers along
with husband John. Karin is
also the bowling coach for the
Ellison Eagles high school team
who won the Girls the state
championship in 2010.
What is your high series?
812, I’ve bowled five 800’s.
How many 300’s have you
bowled? 6
Thoughts on your big night?
I knew what I needed the last
game to shoot 800, and I just
tried to make the best shot I
could to get there. My confidence
level has been higher
this year. I made some adjustments
to my span and got a
ball that reacted better down
the lane, and now I feel back to
where I should be.
What ball did you throw?
The DV8 Hell Raiser.
What is your all-time favorite
bowling ball? I don’t really have
a favorite; it’s just whatever
feels the best and rolls the best
at the time.
What is your all-time high
average? 231 in Colorado
Springs. The bowling competition
in Colorado is very high,
and they pushed me to compete
better each week.
How long have you been
bowling? Probably since I
was four years old. All of the
credit goes to my father(Dick
Atkinson) who was on the
All-American Army team(with
Brian Voss as a teammate), and
once he got out of the military
he opened his own center in
1987. He built Hallmark Lanes
from scratch and it’s always
been a family sport. I’m very
proud to have shot the first 800
by a female in the house that
my family owns.
Who is your favorite pro
bowler? Growing up Brian Voss
was my favorite, but I became
fascinated with Diandra
Asbaty and Tish Johnson, I
got to know Tish when I was
in Colorado Springs. They are
both great individuals.
Most memorable bowling
moment? Shooting my first
800. I had no idea I was on 800
pace, but my friends Cassie
Golden and Stephanie Laney
both ran up on the approach
and attacked me after my
fill-shot. My whole team was
keeping track, but I really
wasn’t paying attention. I’m a
believer in not paying attention
to the score, just bowl the
frame you’re in.
What lessons has the game
taught you? Always stay
Happy New Year! I hope you
all had a wonderful Christmas
and will be safely ringing in
the New Year with friends,
family, and all the ones you
love. I’ll be bringing in the
New Year with one of the
things I love, the blackjack
table! I know, I really cannot
figure out why I’m still single.
This is the time of the year
when we all reflect on our lives
and make resolutions to change
things to make ourselves better
in future. Some of the most
popular resolutions are to go
on a diet or eat better, to get
more exercise, to quit smoking
or drinking, and to get more
organized. Others can be less
specific like spending more
time with family or friends,
helping others, learning
something new, and enjoying
life more. I could resolve to do
everything on this list except
that I don’t smoke, but I don’t
like to make any resolutions I
know I’m going to break.
I know Tony would love it
if I would resolve to get the
Last Call done by Friday every
week, but some weeks I just
have too hard of a time finding
a topic. I’m sure all of you have
noticed some “off” weeks after
reading my article and thought,
“who cares?” or “why did I
need to read 700 words about
a Kia?” but I try to keep things
as relevant and interesting as
possible week to week. So my
resolution for Tony is that I
will try harder not to turn the
Last Call into the Last Minute
every week. (Editor’s Note:
BEST NEWS EVER!!!)
For myself, I’m going to
work on losing these extra
pounds I put back on in 2012.
I’m not going to say I’m going
on diet because that might
last a week. I will resolve to
pay more attention to what
I am eating and to cut back
on the Dr. Pepper and other
empty calories I’m consuming.
That, plus a little extra activity
should do the trick in a month
or two.
We have several tournaments
I’m going to bowl
coming up in the first quarter
of this year. So, I’m also going
to try to get out and actually
put in some time on the lanes
practicing in the next few
months so I will be sharper
and more competitive. Let’s not
get too specific, but I am going
to try to practice at least twice
a month. I know, I don’t want
to make it too hard on myself
to keep my resolutions.
I’m also going to work on
de-cluttering my life. I think
this will help me as well as
helping others as I have lots of
clothing that no longer fit and I
need to donate. I have to be the
worlds worst at thinking “I’ll
fit back into these one day” and
keeping everything. Problem is,
even if they fit, will I want to
wear them again? So, if anyone
knows a good women’s shelter
or somewhere besides Goodwill
that I should donate, please let
me know.
Obviously holding on to my
past is not helping me move
on to a great future. So, to kick
this year off right I will be following
most of the traditions of
what to eat for good luck and
good fortune in the upcoming
year. They say you should eat
12 grapes at midnight, one for
each month, and if the grape is
sweet it will be a good month.
Do you think if I take 12 sips
of different wines I could ac-
In all my years of sports I
have never seen as much hype
and discussion surrounding a
player who doesn’t play more
than I have with Tim Tebow.
Newspapers write about him,
television reporters critique
him, and even rappers sing
about him, but in the end he is
still a third string quarterback
who rarely sees the field so
why does he get so much
attention. I can only guess it is
because he appears to do and
be everything that most people
would strive to become. We all
make choices in life and most
of us make many mistakes,
but Tebow seems to always say
the right things and act the
right way so you pull for a guy
like that. Then there are some
who simply want to destroy
the good guy image he’s built.
These people are always looking
to read between the lines
and turn some quote of his into
a negative to try and ruin his
image. I saw a headline last
week about Tebow saying he
is disappointed and frustrated
with the season he had with
the NY Jets this year, and they
have somehow turned that
48 th Annual
into negative press for him and
have begun calling him a quitter.
Quite frankly the Jets are
6-9 and have been eliminated
from the playoffs for a couple
of weeks so I would argue that
anyone in that locker room
who DEOSN’T describe the
season as disappointing and
frustrating should be cut immediately.
In all I am no NFL
scout, but it doesn’t appear to
me that Tim Tebow is an elite
NFL quarterback, but the guy
has a lot of heart and is a great
role model for kids so I’m sure
he will be able to get a couple
more years of paychecks simply
based on being that. As for his
next team, the Jacksonville
Jaguars, at least you can put
some extra butts in the seats!
Being a Dallas Maverick
fan was tough in the 90’s, but
we have been rewarded ever
since with stout teams capable
of winning 50 to 60 games
every year and making several
deep playoff runs. However,
it appears that we have come
to the end of that era. Quite
frankly this Dallas Maverick
team is plain painful to watch.
The Mavs look slow and un-
athletic, maybe because Chris
Kaman looks like someone
held the turbo button down too
long on a video game, and not
much fun to watch. Last year I
was okay with a mediocre team
because the hope of signing
some big time free agents was
alluring, but since they didn’t
get any of them this team
looks terrible. I’m not sure
what Mark Cuban is planning,
but surely all these one year
contracts must give the Mavs
some flexibility to go after
next year’s top free agents. I
trust him so I am sure he will
make it work. The Mavs were
ready to put all their eggs in
the Deron Williams basket and
look how that turned out for
the Brooklyn Nets. Maybe no
one should be happier about
not getting him than Rick
Carlisle seeing as he still has a
job and Avery Johnson doesn’t.
Later this week you will
all be in for a real treat as the
premier of Aerial Bowling by
Dexter will be available via
You Tube. I am not exactly sure
of the date, but supposedly by
the end of this week it will be
available. It’s pretty entertaining
so make sure you go to You
Tube later this week and search
for Aerial Bowling by Dexter
to include a presence at the
My view on
Competitive Bowling
By Xeno Garcia
Competitive bowling. Where
has it gone? It’s been a question
I’ve asked myself for several
months now. I started bowling
competitively in a time when
bowling was still considered
bowling. A crowded bowling
alley went quiet when someone
had the first 11 hits. Scratch
tournaments were alive and
well. The best players from all
across the country, traveling
by plane or packing themselves
into a tiny sedan. Tournaments
in Texas paying $3000, $5000,
$10,000, and even $50,000 to
first place. It was a good time.
Billy Cathey captured highseries
Unfortunately,
it was the
beginning of
the end.
The bowlers of my generation
and those following have
nowhere to compete anymore.
I found myself asking why.
Everyone’s number one answer
is the economy. Probably
right, of course the economy
is a factor in the decline of the
bowling industry in general
and its really unfortunate that
our generation is seeing the
worst of it. Costs are going up,
payouts are staying the same
across the board. Some days
I wonder why I continue to
compete at this level. Where
is the payoff? It’s beginning
to get harder and harder for
me to see. I bowl to win first
and foremost, but money is
important! Very important.
It’s impossible to live unless
there is some type of financial
benefit to it all.
I’ve had to make every
tournament a business decision.
Possible payout minus the
expenses. Seems easy enough
on paper but there’s always
more to it. As a general rule I
like first place to pay 10 times
my entry fee. For instance if
the entry fee is $100, I would
like to see first pay $1000.
But there are other factors
which make it appealing to me
as well, the cash ratio being
one of them. Most events are
1:5 or 1:6 ratios. Some tournaments
with qualifying squads
are 1:8 or 1:10. Those that pay
1:3 or 1:4 will usually pay less
to first place (unless sponsors
are used). I like the idea of
paying more spots because
it lets bowlers live to fight
another day. These things can
get expensive!
I always question the payout
of the tournament, where are
my entry fees going? I research
the payout history for each
tournament, event, or tournament
club. Most tournaments
have a history of results I can
look at for quick reference. I
consider lineage as being $4
per game (which is a pretty
high estimate but that’s the
number I use). Multiply the lineage
by the number of games
bowled by the players; including
the qualifying, semis, and
finals. This total gives me a
general idea of the tournament
directors costs for running the
event. Once I have that number,
I start adding up the total
payout of their last tournament.
Now I should have an idea of
what the tournament director
is making at the event. I bowl
them all regardless of format,
cost, or location, as long as the
numbers make sense to me.
Directing a tournament is
no easy task and I wouldn’t
wish it upon anybody. If
things don’t run perfectly,
people complain, there’s always
someone that isn’t happy and
on occasion, a mistake is made
that costs someone a lot of
money. It’s not something I
wish to ever do myself. For that
reason, I’m extremely grateful
to all the tournament directors
in the southwest region; Donna
Conners, Terry Taylor, Tina
Taylor, Jim King, Kathy King,
Paul Henderson, Charlie Natal,
Duane Bates, Steven Hauk,
Greg Oneal, Pete McCordic,
just to name a few. Most of
their work is behind the scenes
and I’m sure they rarely get
the Thank You’s they deserve.
They do all the hard work to
get these events so we can still
bowl competitively, whether
it be a handicap or scratch
tournament. Be sure and thank
the tournament directors in
your area, without them,
competitive bowling would be
long gone by now.
New SMART point system,
website interface for 2013
ARLINGTON — Participants
and providers in SMART,
the scholarship management
program for youth bowlers,
will notice some changes to
the program's online portal in
2013. The changes are designed
to strengthen the program and
enhance functionality.
Effective January 2013,
recipients will see scholarship
awards displayed in their
SMART account as points
rather than dollars, with one
point equal to five dollars.
The value of all scholarships
remains the same, and the
points will be converted to dollars
when a recipient requests
the use of funds.
"Parents, students and
providers can be assured
their funds are safe and the
reporting change to points
will not affect scholarship
amounts," SMART Corporation
Board Chairman Wally Hall
said. "This reporting change
strengthens the SMART program
by better aligning with
standards of athletic associations
across the country.
"We received valuable
counsel from educators and
industry leaders in states such
as Illinois and Michigan in
making these adjustments. The
Angelo ends four-year
PBA title slump
Viper Championship Victory
LAS VEGAS — Brad Angelo
of Lockport, N.Y, with two
strikes and an eight-count in
the 10th frame, ended four
years of frustration with a 233-
232 victory over Finland’s Mika
Koivuniemi to win the Professional
Bowlers Association
Viper Championship at South
Point Hotel and Casino.
Angelo, who won his only
PBA Tour title in the 2008
Viper Championship in Omaha,
Neb., came into the Viper
Championship finals as the
top qualifier, but got help from
Koivuniemi in the final frame
before pulling off his clutch
victory.
The Viper Championship,
the second of five PBA Tour
events held as part of the
GEICO PBA World Series of
Bowling IV at South Point,
aired Sunday on ESPN.
“The finals are airing on my
birthday, and I guarantee there
will be an absolute blow-out
Christmas party, slash birthday
party, slash victory number
two party at Brad Angelo
Lanes,” the now 43-year-old
Angelo said.
Koivuniemi started the title
match with a 4-10 split and an
open frame. Angelo returned
the favor in the third frame
when he left a 4-6-7 split and
opened. Neither bowler missed
the pocket after those errors,
although each left and converted
a single-pin spare.
The contest came down to
the 10th frame where Koivuniemi,
working on a string of four
strikes, added a fifth on his
first shot. Needing nine pins
and a spare to lock up the title,
Koivuniemi left the 3-6-9-10 to
give Angelo a chance to win
with a double and eight pins,
PBA LLC Photo
Brad Angelo
and that’s exactly what the
11-year PBA Tour veteran got.
“Mika gave me a chance,
but I feel for him,” Angelo said.
“I’ve bowled against him for 25
years and he’s about as classy
as they come. He made some
great shots to virtually shut me
out, and the next thing I know,
he got six (pins).
“All you ever want is a
chance. That’s what I kept
saying to myself, give me a
chance,” Angelo continued. “I
thought I needed nine pins to
win. I guess it didn’t register
that he got six pins, not seven,
but I didn’t look at the score.
That’s the first time in my
career I didn’t look to see what
I really needed; I just got up
and tried to make three quality
shots.”
The victory was redemption
for four years of extreme
frustration for Angelo.
“My slow years were certainly
not for lack of effort,” he
said. “I dealt with the evolution
of the sport. Bowling with so
much friction on the lanes here
in Las Vegas, a guy like me
2012 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup
Shayna and Syafiq take titles
for Singapore and Malaysia
Shayna Ng of Singapore and
Syafiq Rhidwan Abdul Malek
of Malaysia are the QubicaAMF
Bowling World Cup champions
for 2012 after a stunning
display in the stepladder finals,
held in the Sky Bowling Centre
in Wroclaw, Poland. Shayna
first had to overcome England’s
Kirsten Penny in the semi-final,
which she did by 2 games to
nil, 246 to 215 and 221 to 191.
She moved on to play Aumi
Guerra of the Dominican
Republic, trying to win the
title for a record third time in a
row. Aumi started like a train,
winning the first game 269 to
224, but Shayna came back to
win and amazing second game
by 267 to 259. So a third game
was needed and two big splits
put Aumi at a big disadvantage.
Photos B.C. Cheah abf-online.org
Syafiq Rhidwan Abdul Malek of
Malaysia, left and Shayna Ng of
Singapore.
By the 9th frame it was all
over and Shayna took the third
game 247 to 169. Her set of 738
is a new arena record, beating
the Philippines’ Lisa del
Rosario’s 737 set in 2001.
Shayna is studying for a
without the speed and rev rate
some of the power guys have,
is pretty much nullified.
“Some of these guys – and
they’re great players – have an
advantage over guys like me.
My weak 10 pin is their messenger
10-pin strike. My 2-10
split could be another strike for
them because they can send
the headpin off the wall.
“It’s been a struggle, but
today I feel great. Great,” he
said with a grin. “Hopefully
I’ve silenced some of the people
who decided that my career is
over. Hopefully I’ve shoved that
right in their mouths.”
Koivuniemi advanced to
the title match with a 214-150
victory over Mike Fagan of
Dallas in the first match, and
a 258-180 win over reigning
PBA Player of the Year Sean
Rash of Montgomery, Ill., in the
semifinal match.
The GEICO World Series of
Bowling continues on ESPN
next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with
the finals of the Chameleon
Championship. Finalists will
include Bahrain’s Fawaz
Abdulla, the first Middle
Eastern player to reach the
nationally-televised finals of a
PBA Tour event; 2010-11 PBA
Rookie of the Year Scott Norton
of Costa Mesa, Calif.; PBA Hall
of Famer Walter Ray Williams
Jr., of Ocala, Fla., the winningest
player in PBA history
with 47 PBA Tour titles, and
top qualifier Jason Belmonte of
Australia, a two-handed player
who won three titles during
World Series of Bowling III in
Remy really helped me make
A FEEL GOOD STORY
extremely lucky in that aspect.
DB: I know how much
my friends meant to me but I
didn’t want to be a burden and
shied away from people. How
SS: Friends have been a
big emotional support. I had
friends bring me lunch in the
hospital daily. Call me and
Angie to see if we were OK.
Just knowing friends care is
a big motivator to get better.
People who have dealt with
been more than willing to
share their stories and be there
for support. I got messages on
Facebook from people I knew
life being unfair at times? She
responds with “it’s God’s will”.
I guess that has sunk in over
time. I have never asked “why”
or “why me”? It’s useless and
pointless to dwell on the worst
that might happen. If I’m sick
and laying in a hospital bed,
then I deal with it and look
forward to when I get to go
home. Yes, getting told you have
cancer, going through treatments
and having my body try
to shut down on me is terrible.
But it could of been a lot worse
and I could of not had the support
group I did. For that, I feel
I truly am very fortunate.
Well a couple of weeks ago
I texted Sean and we were
chatting and he said he just
had a MRI done and it showed
something in the area like it
had before. Four days later he
texted me back and said it was
just scar tissue. THANK GOD
is what I said. But that is the
way we live. When you deal
with The Big C you are never
truly at ease. But that is why
I say this is a feel good story.
Nothing was there and we hope
nothing ever is. He is truly one
of the good guys, and he can
inspire all of us to keep going
even when there is darkness
hanging over our heads.

THE BOWLING NEWS | Thursday, January 3, 2013 | Page 13
Jane Morris
passes away
By Michelle Rogers
The Dallas area recently lost
a huge supporter and pioneer
of junior bowling with the
passing of Jane Morris, long
time youth director at AMF
Showplace Lanes Garland and
Blazer Bowl. She was born
on May 27, 1939 and died
December 15, 2012 she was 73.
Married to Willie Morris for 46
years.
Bowling was not only in her
blood, it also became her life.
Jane grew up in the world of
bowling, her father Raymond
Rainey owned Garland Lanes.
She worked the many positions
of a bowling center and took
over as Youth Director in 1977
at Preston Forrest Lanes. When
it closed in 1980 she moved to
Blazer Bowl and then made her
final move to Showplace Lanes
in Garland in 1991.
Jane married Willie Morris,
a Garland High School friend,
in 1966. They reconnected
at Blazer Bowl after hearing
his name called for a high
game one night during league.
Together they raised her two
sons, Donald and Richard
Perry, who also enjoyed and
excelled in the game. Jane was
an avid bowler who averaged
190 for years, back when lanes
were tough. Her personal best
was a high game of 289, a 748
series and she seldom lost the
pot games that she and Willie
would bowl as partners. She
was a long time member of
TCBA bowling with the teams
of Bowling and Billiards and
then Showplace Garland Pro
Shop where I finally got the
pleasure of bowling with her.
Her love of the sport also
flowed down to her grandchildren
Keith, Erin, William and
Christopher. She was instrumental
in re-establishing Dallas
area high school bowling and
was the coach for Lakeview
Centennial High School helping
the men win a State Championship
and then runner up the
years her grandson Keith was a
junior and senior.
Her time as Youth Director
was a true passion for her. She
told her husband on her first
Saturday league day at Showplace,
a 58 lane house filled
with people and a full team
on every lane, “if everyone
loved their job as much as I
do, everyone would be happy.”
She not only coached the kids
in her program, she would
also be a surrogate mother
to them. She helped establish
the Grand Prix Scholarship
program which awards points
for participation in league and
tournaments that are converted
to money for use in college.
Some of her better known
juniors include Del Ballard, Jr,
Ted Pritts and Ken Johnson.
I remember when I
started bowling juniors here
in Dallas in ’79; she was one
of the people I always saw at
Jane Morris
tournaments and Jr. Travel
league. She had about 15 – 20
kids around her at all times
constantly asking questions,
telling jokes or simply hugging
on her. She was never
frazzled and loved it. When we
became teammates and friends
bowling TCBA, I enjoyed her
tenacity as a bowler and her
desire to win but have fun.
We would celebrate with a
trip to Baskin Robbins often.
When I became a mom and
my girls starting bowling, she
was their youth director and
I appreciated even more, the
time and attention she gave
to the kids and the parents.
She organized incredible trips
and helped raise money for
the state tournaments for “her
kids” by establishing fund
raising in many forms, renting
charter buses and making sure
everyone going could afford the
food and hotel rooms.
“She always put the kids
first and didn’t care about getting
involved in the politics of
junior bowling,” said Del. “She
was one of the nicest ladies
and will be missed greatly”.
Jane Morris passed away
from complications of bone
cancer. Willie said that he
hoped when people thought
about her that they remember
“she loved what she did and
she was very good at it”. I
agree and am thankful for all
of her contributions. A memorial
service celebrating her life
is being planned and details
are forthcoming.
and 237 against 225 and 221.
He said afterwards: “I think I
was lucky to play on the championship
lanes first. I learnt
how to play the lanes and I got
better carry in the final match.
It is such an honour for me
and my country as I am the
first Malaysian player to win
this wonderful tournament.”
His win actually means that
Malaysia and the USA are tied
for top country but the trophy
goes to Malaysia as one of their
players won the title.

WTBA partners with USBC
to study new specifications
ARLINGTON — In an effort
to determine new lines of
specifications at the sport of
bowling's elite level, the United
States Bowling Congress will
join with the World Tenpin
Bowling Association to look at
factors that influence scoring.
"Many of our sport's leaders
believe it is critical to look
more closely at how equipment
and conditions influence scoring,"
WTBA President Kevin
Dornberger said. "We need to
consider if there is justification
for additional classifications for
equipment or conditions for use
by federations at the elite level.
This is an important topic to
explore in an objective and
scientific way, which is why we
are joining with USBC in this
study."
A background study and
hypothesis testing will begin
immediately, with lab and field
testing beginning next year.
The studies will be followed by
recommendations to be implemented
and tested at world
events in 2014. A preliminary
report will be presented to the
WTBA Congress in August
2013, while a final recommendation
will be presented in
August 2015.
"We will be looking at what
factors influence scoring and
at what point those factors
change dramatically," USBC
Managing Director of National
Governing Body Neil Stremmel
said. "The study will factor in
bowling ball specifications but
will not be limited to that. It is
important to note that the focus
of the research will be aspects
that influence competition
at the elite level and that we
do not anticipate the results
impacting basic USBC rules."
Stremmel said the study also
will include looking at other
aspects of scoring, including
pins, lane conditioners and
lane patterns.
The you’re okay NMW
Dr. Dean Hinitz says it’s
difficult to raise your arm if
you think you’re going to get
punched in the ribs. That’s
exactly what judging will do to
you. If you think there is some
kind of punishment or price to
pay for a shot, you won’t make
that shot very well. I don’t
mean punishment like jail or
the IRS; I mean things like
being embarrassed or shown to
be wrong (or even human).
It happens to all of us. I
remember not too long ago
playing on some lanes that
changed more quickly than
anything I had ever experienced.
I left the 4/9 on the
right lane. Because I knew they
changed quickly and, in this
house, if one changed, so did
the other, I moved three left
on the left lane. I left the 4/9.
I moved 5 and 3 more on the
right lane (now 8/3 different
than the first 4/9) and guess
what? I left the 4/9. My first
thought was that all those
people were going to think I
didn’t know to move.
What a shock. (Leaving
back-to-back 4/9s, although not
pleasant, wasn’t as much of a
shock as my thought.) I surely
thought I was past all that
stuff. I knew I was moving.
They weren’t keeping me warm
at night or paying the bills, so
what did it matter what they
thought? Oh my. Still have
World Famous
some lessons to learn in this
incarnation, I guess. Anyway, it
was an eye-opener to find that
thought in my head. Of course,
the issue with any thought is
what you do with it. I’m not
responsible for what comes into
my head but I am very responsible
if I choose to keep it. I’m
still working on that part.
I survived three 4/9s in a
row. Regardless if all those
people in scratch league think I
can’t move or didn’t move, I’m
still an okay person. Important
things like the sun coming up
and how happy Semi-Precious
is to see me when I get home
are the same. Those 4/9s
were an inconvenience, not a
tragedy. Too bad I didn’t have
all this wisdom when I shot
129 in Nationals… I used to
think I was unworthy. I mean,
who would want to bowl with
someone who shot 129 at
Nationals??? It’s a constant lesson
to learn to remember that
was my bowling score, not my
life score. I am not my number.
Okayness is a way of life, a
way of thinking of things that
observes what happens, not
judges outcome.
It’s the same way you treat
your doubles partner. You
would never talk to your doubles
partner the way you talk to
yourself. You know that if you
tell someone they are crummy
or worthless or a terrible 10
pin shooter long enough, they
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
It’s hard to believe that 2013
has arrived. Christmas is over,
kids are happy and the stress
we all had at sometime during
the commercialization of His
birthday is subsiding. Time to
get back to normal and wait for
the bills to come in.
I managed to get my bowl on
during 2012, bowling on three
senior leagues at Hallmark
Lanes, Killeen Bowlerama, and
Phantom Warrior Lanes. I am
slowly getting my timing back,
but not my average. I am very
Once again we are looking
forward to August and the
sounds like a long way off, but
it will get here quicker than a
rain storm.
Lefty Mike Scroggins has
assured everyone he will be
back in 2013 to defend his
title. Scroggins has won this
event five times and is always
a threat.
2013 will also bring us more
televised PBA events on ESPN
including five weeks of PBA
league bowling. Eight teams that
will make up the PBA League
were determined through a
draft that was conducted during
the GEICO PBA World Series of
The PBA 50 Tour will have a
few new faces in 2013 with toplevel
players from the PBA Tour
eligible to compete, including
PBA Hall of Famers Pete Weber,
Parker Bohn III and ESPN
analyst Randy Pedersen. Also
on the list of those becoming
eligible at age 50 in the months
ahead are PBA Tour champions
Jack Jurek, Chris Warren and
David Traber.
2013 should be a great year.
While bowling a make up
set for one of my senior leagues
at Phantom Warrior Lanes on
20 December, we arrived at
11 a.m. and there were about
ten high school bowlers there
practicing. By noon the majority
of the 48 lane center was in
use. I have been bowling for
many years in the association
and know most of the league
bowlers, but I saw many young
soldiers and youth bowlers that
I never saw bowling in leagues,
and they were really good.
Talking with the soldiers they
said they didn’t bowl leagues
because of deployments, but
get together for open bowling
whenever they have the chance.
I know some teams and leagues
that would like to have those
young arms on their roster.
again – What do you think
of the USBC awards program?
Personally, I never expect to
roll a 300 game, I’ll leave a ten
pin at some time during the ten
frames. However, I have all the
key chains I need. I bowled a
250 game and got a key chain.
My friend on another team
rolled a 700 series and got the
same key chain as I got. Now
I ask you, Is it harder to roll
three games equaling 700 plus,
or bowling one game for 250?
Come on USBC you can do
better. The awards are laughed
at by most.
Well, it’s time to check my
equipment and try and raise
my average the rest of this
year. There are a lot of tournaments
I am scheduled to bowl
and I don’t want to look too
foolish. Here’s hoping you all
have a great 2013, but most of
all have fun and enjoy your
bowling friends.
Hardwick, who also has more
than 1.7 million followers on
Twitter. “I was actually named
after Chris Schenkel! As a 190-
an annoying stagemom.
“Since bowling is the purest
"Atom Splitters.” Of course,
splits are no good to a bowler,
more to the fact that Chris
Barnes and Co. are so accurate
on the lanes, that the precision
of their shots could split any
single atom of their choosing.
It is very exciting to me that
almost all of the other teams
are owned by professional
athletes who are about to feel
the searing sting of getting
their asses handed to them by
a nerd."
Hardwick’s other credits
include hosting AMC network’s
highly-rated Talking Dead, and
an hour-long stand-up comedy
special called "Mandroid" that
premiered in 2012 on Comedy
Central. He previously hosted
Singled Out on MTV and Web
Soup for the G4 Network.
Hardwick is also getting a
full season at BBC America.
The Nerdist (named after his
popular podcast and website),
has expanded from numerous
pop-culture specials to a
10-episode season that will
kick off in spring 2013 as part
of the cable network's "Supernatural
Saturday" programming
block.
"Chris Hardwick has the
perfect DNA to become an
owner in the PBA League and
we couldn't be more excited
about the partnership,” said
Clark. “His father is a legend
only a great promoter of bowling
already with his All-Star
Celebrity Bowling show on his
web site but brings legions of
fans from his ever-expanding
kingdom to the PBA."
Hardwick will compete in
the Chris Paul PBA League
All-Stars event which will take
place on Jan. 7 at Lucky Strike
LA Live in Los Angeles. The
tournament, which benefits
throw consecutive strikes until
the seventh and eighth frames,
was all but eliminated after six
frames.
“When I got the strike in
the seventh frame, I knew I
just needed one more mark to
lock up the title,” he said. “I
got to thinking it would be really
cool to shoot 300, because
Tony Reyes bowled 300 for his
first title on this lane condition,
and that was kind of going
through my mind. I got a little
jittery in the eighth and threw
it a little quick, and left the 2-8-
“Tony was on all of our
was a masking unit with his
picture on it in the bowling
center and every time you saw
it, it was sad, but you have to
put it out of your mind. You
just had to know he’d want you
to do well. We all wish he was
