The USBC announced its
Hall of Fame Class of 2013 two
weeks ago, and as promised,
I will now reveal my choices.
Nothing too complex here. All
seven listed are worthy of induction,
I chose Lynda Barnes,
Larry Laub, David Ozio, and
Steve Cook.
Along with Liz Johnson and
Kelly Kulick, Barnes bridges
the gap from the PWBA to
present day with amazing
performances in women’s
events as well as showing the
men a thing or two.
Barnes is one of the trio of
women bowlers whom history
will look back as it does now
on the three named Anthony,
Roth, and Holman. Their impact?
Like many pop culture
contemporaries, you know
them by their first names.
Seriously, Lynda, Liz, and Kelly
could and should have been in
the HoF five years ago. Those
three should just list what they
haven’t accomplished on the
lanes. It’s a much shorter list.
Larry Laub has won in the
70s and 2000s on the PBA
and PBA Senior (now PBA50)
National Tours. Even with his
unique release of quietly laying
the ball onto the lane he made
all the coverstocks work from
rubber to resin.

Steve Cook was the first
successful power lefthander on
tour with 15 wins, six of them
against fellow lefties, with
three of those against some
guy named Earl Anthony. His
crowning moment occurred in
1981 as he joined Don Johnson
as only the second bowler to
take a perfect game to the
tenth frame in the Tournament
of Champions title match.
Why David Ozio is not
already enshrined is a mystery
to me, but the well-practiced
pro from Vidor via Beaumont
amazed us all in a career year
of 1991, snapping off a ToC
crown enroute to PBA Player
of the Year. He set the then
four-game TV scoring record
with a 1,050 while winning the
1995 AMF Dick Weber Classic.
As a senior player, he won the
2004 Senior U.S. Open as well
as PBA
Senior Rookie of the Year.
Unwritten rule or not, age
45 is the final threshold for
those qualified years before. To
me, if one exceeds reasonable
qualifications, like Liz and
Kelly, put them in and let them
enjoy it no matter the age.

Former BPAA CEO Don
Harris Passes away at 60
Don Harris, former executive
director of BPAA, passed
away Sunday,
December 23 from
complications
after suffering a
stroke the previous
Tuesday. He was
60.
Don headed the BPAA from
January 1996 - September 1999
after serving as head of the Na-

1129, setting the current three
and four-game TV records. CBD
has the current consecutive TV
strikes record, 20-in-a-row in

you scoring at home, this year’s
target scores were Kelly Kulick
with 743 and Pete Weber 626.
Only Tennelle Milligan had a
higher women’s score of 758 in
2000.

Now back to the nuts and
bolts of what this column
is about; media coverage.
For the ESPN PBA telecasts,
Lon McEachern is no doubt
prepared, but seems not as
familiar with the game. Not
like everyone aspires to be a
bowling announcer, but as one
with experience, it sounds like
me describing poker. But it is,
however, only after three TV
shows. My guess is he’s trying
to refine his comments while
getting more comfortable with
Randy Pedersen’s style. More
on that later.

Even with Jack Black talking
about a bowling-themed
movie that is not the only one
currently in production. In and
around Louisville, Kentucky
filming is wrapping up on a
film called, “Splits.”
According to the production
teams’ website, VSM Entertainment,
“Splits is a fun, PG-13
comedy in the style of Caddyshack
or Dodgeball, where
a group of friends compete in
the Lebowskifest Championship
bowling tournament.” Pretty
tall task to include topics and
concepts from all three of those
laughfests. No word when the
film is due to hit a multiplex
near you. We’ll keep you
posted.

graduating from the University
of North Texas with a BBA in
Journalism.
He is survived by his
mother, Joyce Harris; brother,

Jonah Workman.
