In summary these are:-
• The Gardens are Listed Grade II on the English Heritage Register
of Parks and Garden of Special Historic Interest and the Glass
Pavilions Grade II* on the English
Heritage Register of listed buildings and structures
• Locally listed on the UDP Schedule of Historic Parks and Gardens
• Parks and Countryside Service listed as a City Garden and
Heritage Site.
The full details of the constraints on the Gardens can be found in the HLF
10 Year Management & Maintenance Plan. In summary these are:-
• Sheffield City Council Byelaws with respect to Pleasure Grounds
• Contracts with HLF and other major funders
• The long leasehold relationship with the Sheffield Town Trust,
which is a registered charity.
A2.9 USE OF THE SITE
The Gardens are used as:
• A public park for all the citizens of Sheffield and visitors from
outside Sheffield. A wide variety of events are held each year,
including Promenade Theatre, the Art in the Gardens and a
Broomhill Festival event as well as local schools activity
programmes.
• The framework for Botanical and Horticultural Collections, including
national plant collections, of Weigela and Diervilla and approval is
awaited for the following collections: Caprifoliaceae family
collection, Epimedium, Sarcococca and Parthenocissus.
• The venue for a variety of trials, experiments and to undertake joint
research with a number of local national and international
organisations including the University of Sheffield and the Plant
Collections Network of Britain & Ireland.
• The base for the Friends of the Botanical Gardens Sheffield, who
undertake practical work, give guided tours and organise a
programme of lectures and well as organising a wide range of
fundraising events annually. (See appendix C).
