SHEFFIELD BOTANICAL GARDENS - University of Sheffield

The majority of work is procured via the Kier LLP (Limited Liability
Partnership). Within this contract are specific price adjustment and quality
frameworks to ensure best value. Private contractors are used for
specialised areas of work, which cannot be performed or have not been
part of the contract arrangement within the LLP.
The operations base of the nursery site comprise of offices, messroom,
store rooms, toilets and wash room. Tool store, machinery store fuel
store, glasshouses, classroom and nursery space.
The fuel is kept in one of two fuel stores and clearly marked. Fuel is
delivered to the site on a regular fuel drop run from the central supply
depot. Fuel is therefore only stored in small quantities. All council
operated sites have a no smoking policy, there are fire extinguishers
provided and training in their use has been given to staff.
The classroom is hired by societies and groups for their meetings. The
room consists of a room with a small kitchen area to make hot drinks. The
room has a hearing loop system installed to assist visitors with hearing
problems and there is a supply of tables and chairs within.
Within the Gardens there is a metal toilet unit used by the classroom
users. This unit provides a valuable service to this group even through it is
not very decorative in the Gardens. Every effort is being made to try to
upgrade this unit / relocate it into the nursery.
Investigation is being done to purchase electronic counters on the gates
into Gardens and in the Glass Pavilions. To allow accurate visitor
numbers to be obtained.
A8. MARKETING & PROMOTION
The marketing and promotion of the Garden is supported by the SCC
Media Team. An officer within that team deals with all media and PR
relating to the Parks and Countryside Service. The Gardens are also
marketed through the Corporate PR team, and the City tourist venues,
as one of Sheffield’s top attractions.
• A plan of the Gardens is available free within the Gardens, as is a
brochure of the Riddle Trail. Other publications are provided as
appropriate.

• A glossy newsletter on developments at the Gardens was published at
least twice a year during the restoration project to keep members of the
public up to date with progress on the project.
