Motif-wise and by virtue of its format, the work up for auction
is closely related to the artist's series of 'Nature Morte' paintings
from 1987-88. In Kirkeby's work, 'Nature Morte' is never
merely a trivial genre designation, but rather a very specific
prediction. With Kirkeby, nature is anything but frozen stagnation;
it is something in progress, transformation and degradation.
Neither is Kirkeby's painting a cursory look at the
landscape, but rather a deep archaeological dig beneath the
surface.
Kirkeby finds the term 'colourism' highly problematical and
superficial in relation to his art, yet colour is a key focal point
in his work: "(...) The colour means something, more than decoration.
The colour says something, has a content of a kind that
is difficult to pin down, and that, of course, is precisely the
point of doing a painting".
