Pictorial quality and uncompromising design
This autumn, the modern department at Bruun rasmussen presents three catalogues. in addition to
this main catalogue, there are two catalogues: one which focuses on ove Højgaard andersen’s unique
art collection, and the other on 60 exquisite pieces of furniture by the architect Finn Juhl, celebrating
his 100th birthday.
This catalogue introduces an impressive collection of CoBra works, including 14 pictures by asger
Jorn. leading the way, is ”le sorcier, ii” (a male witch) whose title, as well as the figure depicted,
hints at the performance of the poem ”le Streghe” (the witches) in the italian town of albisola,
during which Jorn and fellow artists dressed up and participated. The painting was created in 1957
– a time of unrest and upheaval – when Jorn leans towards ceramic expression. The glazed surface
of the painting is a clear reminder of his major work from that period – the ceramic relief made for
aarhus Katedralskole (lot 619).
Modern art has many faces, and Kurt Trampedach’s three self-portraits unify his recurring, existential
motifs and versatile imagery (lot 638, 646 and 655). portraiture is also andy warhol’s preferred
genre, and here we have two fine examples. rock’n roll fans will have the opportunity to leave the
auction accompanied by the legendary rolling Stones front man, Mick Jagger (lot 893). or for the
rest, how about warhol’s paraphrase of Botticelli’s famous and beloved renaissance picture ”Birth of
venus” which hangs in the uffizi gallery in Florence (lot 894)?
Cubism, expressionism, and futurism are joined in a single painting in ”gasværkshavnen”, from 1918-
20. The man behind the painting is anton Hansen, who was working at the periphery of the Danish
artistic scene during the inter-war period. The strong imagery and social indignation depicted in the
picture make it an important contribution to the art of the period (lot 606).
The second part of this catalogue contains silver, arts and craft, and Danish furniture classics. one of
the highlights is the architectonic, oversized silver cocktail set with accompanying tray. The set was
designed by the functionalistic architect Kay Fisker and produced by a. Michelsen (lot 940).
Hans J. wegner has been in high demand in recent years. Several of his pieces of furniture have left
indelible traces on international design history. we are offering a number of his most rare models,
designed in the first half of the 1950’s, and made by wegner’s regular collaborator, cabinetmaker
Johannes Hansen (lot 1132, 1134, 135 and 1168).
we are also moving further back in furniture history with a wide variety of designs from the 1930’s
and 1940’s by modernist architects of that time – such as Flemming and Mogens lassen. an example
is a fine egyptian Table by Mogens lassen, which was made to order for the popular illustrator
Christel Marott, who for five decades illustrated magazines and books for young girls in her
characteristic style (lot 1152).
welcome to the autumn auction in Bredgade!
