The equivalent limits <strong>for</strong> HC and CO are Dp/Foo = 19.6 <strong>for</strong> HC and Dp/Foo =<br />

118 <strong>for</strong> CO (ICAO Annex 16 Vol. II paragraph 2.2.2). Smoke is limited to a<br />

regulatory smoke number = 83 (Foo) -0.274 or a value of 50, whichever is the<br />

lower.<br />

A further description of the technical definitions in relation to engine certification<br />

as well as actual engine exhaust emission measurement data can be<br />

found in the ICAO Engine Exhaust Emission Database. The latter database is<br />

accessible from http://www.caa.co.uk, hosted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.<br />

For seagoing vessels, NOx emissions are regulated as explained in Marpol<br />

73/78 Annex VI, <strong>for</strong>mulated by IMO (International Maritime Organisation).<br />

The legislation is relevant <strong>for</strong> diesel engines with a power output higher<br />

than 130 kW, which are installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January<br />

2000 and diesel engines with a power output higher than 130 kW which undergo<br />

major conversion on or after 1 January 2000.<br />

The NOx emission limits <strong>for</strong> ship engines in relation to their rated engine<br />

speed (n) given in RPM (Revolutions Pr Minute) are the following:<br />

• 17 g pr kWh, n < 130 RPM<br />

• 45 x n-0.2 g pr kWh, 130 ” Q 530<br />

• 9.8 g pr kWh, n • 530
