The plot of this Opera turns on the adventures and<br />

vicissitudes of a poet and director of an Italian Company<br />

(Scaramuccia). He engages two performers, Lelio and<br />

Domenico, who give him all sorts of annoyance, and<br />

make love to his servant, Sandrina, a country girl<br />

(Schieroni), she in her turn becoming bitten with the<br />

mania for acting. It is amusingly worked out. The<br />

light and sparkling music is well adapted to the sub-<br />

ject, and is the joint production of two brothers (Ricci),<br />

who " collaborated " with much success, and whose<br />

works are still popular in some parts of Italy. One duet<br />

in particular became very popular in Dublin.<br />

Mdlle. Parigiani was a good contralto, created a most<br />

favourable impression, and contributed much to the com-<br />

pleteness of this very efficient Italian Company.<br />

On Thursday, March 22nd, "Scaramuccia" was re-<br />

peated, " in consequence," as the bills announced, " of<br />

the very general demand for its repetition."<br />

On Saturday, March 24th, 1838, was performed a<br />

selection from " II Barbiere," after which, for the first<br />

time in Dublin, Rossini's admired Opera, " L'ltaliani in<br />

Algieri." Mustapha (Dey of Algiers), Signor Bellini j<br />

Isabella (an Italian Lady), Mdlle. Schieroni ; Zulma,<br />

Mdlle. Vermani ; Taddeo, Signor Sanquirico ; Lindor (a<br />

young Italian), Signor Catone.<br />

The overture to " L'ltaliani" has been made familiar<br />

by frequent performance at the Concerts and in the<br />

Theatre. The music of the Opera cannot, however, be<br />

recorded as a success. The celebrated trio,<br />
