and good property. Miss A. (familiarly called Alley)<br />

Hyland was also an especial favourite, an accomplished<br />

artiste (soprano), and good musician. She performed all<br />

the principal soprano parts with Braham, with great suc-<br />

cess, in an English Operatic engagement on the occasion<br />

of his farewell visit to Dublin in 1839. The Hylands<br />

were a most gifted family. The eldest Miss Hyland will<br />

be remembered by old stagegoers as a highly accom-<br />

plished vocal and histrionic artiste, with a most attractive<br />

appearance. She possessed a cultivated soprano voice,<br />

and as an actress alone, could have commanded high terms<br />

in London. She made a successful appearance at Covent<br />

Garden, under the auspices of the late John Barton (then<br />

an eminent singing-master in Dublin). Miss Hyland<br />

shortly after retired, on her marriage with Thomas Hayes,<br />

the well-known and much-respected stockbroker of<br />

Westmoreland-street. The stage, indeed, experienced a<br />

loss from the retirement of this lady. The youngest<br />

sister, Jane, was also exceedingly clever : indeed a versatile<br />

genius. With her sister "Alley" she sang duets, which,<br />

from relationship of voice and careful practice, were ren-<br />

dered with great perfection.<br />

She also performed Doctor<br />

O'Toole in the " Irish Tutor," dancing the Irish jig in<br />

capital style.<br />

To return to " Cenerentola," the Clorinda and Tisbe<br />

of the above-mentioned young ladies received great<br />

encomiums in the press, and the strongest expressions of<br />

praise from the Countess Degli Antonj.<br />

On Thursday, January 5th, the Opera was " La Gazza<br />

Ladra." The Podesta, Signer De Begnis ; Fernando,
