Hofstra has played in six Holiday Festival’s at Madison
Square Garden and won the tournament in 1998, 1999 and
2006. The Pride is one of just six teams to repeat as Holiday
Festival champions. Duquesne (1953, 1954),
Providence (1965, 1966), St. John’s (1984,
1985, 1986, 1987), Manhattan (2001,
2002) and Virginia Tech (2007, 2008)
are the other five teams to successfully
defend the title. Hofstra had a chance
at a third straight title, but finished as
runners-up in the 2000 Holiday Festival.
Antoine Agudio (2006) and Norman
Richardson (1998 and 1999) have been
named Holiday Festival Most Valuable
Player. Richardson joined an elite group
of players by laying claim to his second
Most Valuable Player trophy following
the 1999 Holiday Festival. Richardson
is one of six players in tournament
history to win a second MVP, joining
LaSalle’s Tom Gola (1952 and 1954),
Providence’s Jimmy Walker (1965 and
1966), St. John’s David Russell (1979
and 1982) and Chris Mullin (1981

and 1984), and Manhattan’s Luis Flores (2001 and 2002) as
repeat winners. Richardson was the second of three players
to win the award in consecutive years following Walker, the
father of Toronto Raptor Jalen Rose, who
did it in 1965 and 1966. Flores became
the third player to have back-to-back
MVPs when he won the award in 2001
and 2002. Richardson was an alltournament
selection in 2000.
In addition to back-to-back MVP’s
Richardson was also selected to the
ECAC Holiday Festival All-Decade
(1994-99) Team along with Allen
Iverson (Georgetown), Ray Allen
(Connecticut), Andrae Patterson
(Indiana), Felipe Lopez (St. John’s)
and Ron Artest (St. John’s).
