Hofstra in the Community
As Long Island’s premier basketball program, the Hofstra Pride
believes it has a special responsibility to the community. Thus, whether
it’s the height of the season or those “slow” off-season months, the
Hofstra Men’s Basketball staff and team are always active in the area.
Hofstra Coach Mo Cassara is actively involved in the Coaches Versus
Cancer program and was honored for his work with the organization
with an on-field presentation prior to a New York Yankees game this
past summer.
Several times each year the Pride conducts clinics for youth and high
school teams and coaches. These clinics reinforce the fundamentals of
the game while providing new coaching ideas. The Hofstra University
Basketball Camp, held annually each summer on the Hofstra campus,
teaches and reinforces the basics of the game while providing a fun
atmosphere in which to learn.
The team hosts many youth groups at home games and the Pride
interact with their fans by signing autographs in the lobby of the Mack
Sports Complex following home contests. Team members also take
part in the annual Family Fun Day prior to a women’s basketball game
at Hofstra.
Hofstra players and staff also lend their time and efforts to charitable
and educational causes, including the Special Olympics and Island
Harvest food drives. Members of the Hofstra Basketball team are also
frequent speakers and guest readers at schools across Long Island.
Hofstra Athletics and the Let ALL The Children Play organization
have partnered together to present a Summer Sports Clinic. The
clinic’s goal was to promote “INCLUSION through Sports and
Play.” The clinics were run by Hofstra Men’s and Women’s
Soccer as well Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Basketball team
members and coaches. Let ALL The Children Play is an
organization that builds accessible playgrounds and inclusive
programs that allow children with disabilities to play side by side
with their able bodied peers. The organization will dedicate a
brick to Hofstra Athletics in a new playground being constructed
at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY.
