<strong>Hofstra</strong> hosts more than 500 cultural events annually, bringing thousands<br />

of scholars, dignitaries and other participants to campus. More than<br />

200 musical and dramatic performances take place on campus each<br />

year. The University recently <strong>com</strong>pleted a year-long celebration of its<br />

75th anniversary, <strong>com</strong>plete with a concert, academic convocation and<br />

cake, several conferences and signature events which brought together<br />

students, faculty, alumni and <strong>com</strong>munity. In October 2008 the eyes of<br />

facilities, including the 13,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium and the<br />

5,054-seat David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. <strong>Hofstra</strong> also<br />

has an indoor, Olympic-sized (eight lane, 50-meter) swimming pool, one<br />

of the largest such facilities in the New York metropolitan area.<br />

The <strong>Hofstra</strong> athletic program <strong>com</strong>petes on the NCAA Division I level<br />

and is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The University<br />

sponsors 17 intercollegiate programs – eight men’s sports and nine<br />

women’s sports. <strong>Hofstra</strong> has men’s teams in basketball, baseball,<br />

lacrosse, golf, tennis, wrestling, soccer and cross country. Women’s<br />

sports include basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, soccer, field hockey,<br />

lacrosse, cross country and golf.<br />

<strong>Hofstra</strong>’s academic programs are accredited by numerous national<br />

agencies and the University is one of only 280 schools, out of more than<br />

3,600 colleges and universities nationwide, with a chapter of the national<br />

honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Of <strong>Hofstra</strong>’s 1,165 faculty members,<br />

the world were on <strong>Hofstra</strong> for the final presidential debate between<br />

Barack Obama and John McCain. The debate was a transformational<br />

moment for the University, highlighting the achievements of<br />

our students and faculty and their engagement in the political<br />

process. Leading up to the debate, students and the entire <strong>com</strong>munity<br />

were engaged by the year-long Educate ’08 program, almost 150<br />

lectures, conferences, and events focused on the issues, history and<br />

politics of the presidency, followed by Define ’09, which looked at the<br />

first year of his presidency. The University continues to host important<br />

political events, such as the New York State Gubernatorial Debate in<br />

2010.<br />

The <strong>Hofstra</strong> Museum, which houses one of the largest art collections<br />

in the metropolitan area, coordinates approximately eight exhibitions<br />

annually and offers exhibition areas and an extensive outdoor sculpture<br />

collection, with 75 pieces. The <strong>Hofstra</strong> Museum is accredited by the<br />

American Association of Museums – one of only 94 universities in the<br />

nation and one of six in New York to hold that distinction.<br />

center, a recently renovated recreation center and numerous athletic<br />
