ASSISTANT COACH<br />

Wayne Morgan is entering his second<br />

season as an assistant coach on the <strong>Hofstra</strong><br />

Men’s <strong>Basketball</strong> staff in <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong>.<br />

Morgan came to <strong>Hofstra</strong> last year with<br />

over 20 years of coaching experience at the<br />

Division I level, including <strong>12</strong> years as an<br />

assistant coach at Syracuse, six years as a<br />

head coach at Long Beach State and three<br />

years as a head coach at Iowa State.<br />

Morgan took over the head coaching<br />

position at Long Beach State beginning<br />

in the 1996-97 season. During his six-year tenure with the<br />

49ers, Morgan <strong>com</strong>piled 91 wins and earned a 55-39 record in<br />

the Big West conference. Three of his teams earned a first or<br />

second place finish in the Western Division, while his 1999-<br />

2000 team finished 24-6 overall, 15-1 in the Big West and<br />

earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament. He was<br />

named the NABC District 15 Coach of the Year in 2000.<br />

In 2002, Morgan was hired as an assistant coach<br />

at Iowa State and took over the head coaching<br />

position in 2003. In his three seasons at the helm,<br />

he guided the Cyclones to a pair of postseason<br />

berths, including an appearance in the second<br />

round of the NCAA Tournament in 2005. That<br />

season, he guided his squad to five wins over<br />

nationally ranked teams, a championship of the<br />

Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, and a seven-game<br />

winning streak in the Big <strong>12</strong> Conference. In his<br />

first year with the Cyclones, he led his team to a<br />

17-1 home record, the second-most home wins in<br />

school history.<br />

Morgan served as Jim Boeheim’s assistant at<br />

Syracuse from 1984-96, helping the Orangemen<br />

to two appearances<br />

in the national<br />

championship<br />

game (1987, 1996).<br />

to the Elite Eight<br />

three times and to<br />

the Sweet Sixteen<br />

five times. The<br />

season titles and<br />

with Morgan on<br />

the staff, while the<br />

program’s overall<br />

record over those <strong>12</strong> seasons was 316-108.<br />

A 1973 graduate of St. Lawrence University<br />

with a degree in physical education, Morgan<br />

played for Richard Cassara, the father of<br />

current <strong>Hofstra</strong> head coach Mo Cassara, as a<br />

member of the Saints. Morgan also earned a<br />

master’s degree in physical education, with<br />

a minor in psychology of sports, at Ithaca<br />

College.<br />
